tips for refreshing fuel system?
Kickinmule replied to Kickinmule's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Dave, pulled the tank this morning. Check out these pics! Well it looks fine from here: OK how about a little iPhone investigating... Uh Oh! Is it possible that someone Cooked a Turkey in here! Looks Wonderful, Lets see what it feel like... Lets dig a little deeper after rattling the tank and giving it a few smacks... 2 Handfulls and i cry Uncle! So I think this tank is not gonna make it. If anyone has a different opinion I would love to hear it. Certainly didn't leak! If it could be salvaged then I'm saddled with finding a fuel sending unit that is out of production. So what are the pitfalls of the baffle-less/slosh pan-less tank and the Cherokee sending unit? Are there any other tank/sending unit combos that will operate and fit properly?- 22 replies

tips for refreshing fuel system?

If my tank is shot(haven't pulled it yet) or not would replacing it get me to a newer version fuel sending unit? The rock auto tank doesn't specify availability of replacement sending unit. Thanks Mitch- 22 replies

tips for refreshing fuel system?
Kickinmule replied to Kickinmule's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ho Mama! pretty sure i have found the problem! And this is after a thorough cleaning! I wish I had taken pics of it before! Yippee can't wait to get that tank off and see the innards! So What is my best option on the sending unit? I've read here that it's nearly impossible to find one for this '88 shortbed 4.0. Anyone out there wanna part with one? I don't know if a float/sending unit will even reattach to this mess.- 22 replies

Nah I'd rather put money I don't have into doing things to it that I don't know how to do and be just happy as a cat sleeping on a bed a cheese.

Pulled home a couple days ago my '88 Comanche Chief 4x4 inline 6, 30/35, Puegeot 10/5, 231 tc, with 211,xxx miles looks to be completely stock. Needs a battery and maybe a radiator hose or water pump. Hasn't run in over a year so I have some questions for yall in order to turn her over and here her run. Posted some Q's in the tech forum. oh yeah $200 bucks got her bought!

6 pickups! in one Comanche.

So this '88 chief 4.0 has the closed cooling sytem? i gather its called that because there is no radiator cap. Yes i'm that inexperienced. So question is, as I make ready for first ignition, how do i judge how much water/coolant is in the system? also should i be concerened about the contents after the truck has been sitting for over a year w/o being started?

Alright so I didn't do my do diligence. So there is also a Fuel Pump relay. I can check that out... Looks like I need to hone my search skills and keep reading!- 22 replies

Ok since it has been at least a year since my '88 has been started how do i refresh the fuel system before trying to start it? I have not gotten the fuel sending unit to respond yet. I reground the ground behind the tail light, Thank Y'all for that one! Can i jump the resistor to see if it is the problem?

Glad to be a part Jeepskater433! Certainly wanting to put the cart before the horse is just natural excitement kickin in. I know I've got lots of checking it out to do before it even rolls outta the shop. I think the Roll bar is what puts the "man" in Comanche. Bout to be bird huntin time down in your neck of the woods...doves, bwt, gwt, etc. -

Thanks Minuit, crawled under and confirmed the 30 and 35. I guess since there is no selector anywhere for full time 4x4 that I've got the 231 T/C. I'm gonna assume that the truck is carrying the original tranny at this point, since everything else seems completely stock. Thru in a battery today and truck cranks, but alas no fuel sending unit noise, so I think I'll drop the tank while checking out the sending unit electrical issue. No telling what is in that tank! Also upon keying had no dash component response. The radio did pop to life! Hoping for only ground problems. Looks like the only 2 things I need from here on in are money and time... -

This truck has been parked outside for probably 3 years w/out starting. Untill last summer when owner had a buyer so he worked on the fuel sending unit and got it started, then noticed water leaking under engine compartment. He shut it down and there it has been. For $200.00 I think I can take it over for him. Can I get an "Amen"? So many questions for ya'll. 1. How do I determine what drivetrain components I have? 2. Which ones will suffice for the previous post's intended use I described.(DD, no crawls, lift for bigger rubber, etc.)? 1a. Oh yeah, what should my first move be? This might go down like a "Blog truck build" where I try to do what the more experienced and knowledgeable wrench heads suggest... -
Just joined up a couple days ago, after rescuing my soon to be new obsession. I have owned a Jeep before, a '78 CJ Levis edition that almost rotted away after some horrible self attempted lift endeavors that rendered it road un-worthy, until it was rescued by a friend.Sorry to see it go. Now it's my slightly better informed chance at redemption. I know very little about this Chief but will be diggin in soon. It is a stock 1988 4x4 I6 200,000+ miles with factory air, manual trans, windows and locks. Slight surface rust on top, bed and tailgate. Looking to add lift for cool factor and up-size the tires. Would like to add front and rear bumper with winch on front. Probably never gonna see any crawlin or boggin, more like takin the kid to school and some deer lease in style time! Yes it came home with scrap metal the PO was saving. That might scrap out enough for a water pump or hose, which is all he thought the truck needed...
