  1. Thanks Guys! I like the 409 idea. That stuff has a rep for cleaning all kinds of stuff.
  2. OK, so we are working on the "new" 88 MJ and are getting to the fun parts. (Yesterday laying under the truck with dirt falling into my eyes while fixing the tail light wiring was not the fun part.) It has a AX-15 from a 93 XJ (internal slave) with a leaky clutch master. Go figure! :fs1: Damage is very minimal at this point so we want to get it changed and cleaned up pretty quick. Is there a general agreement on the maker of the replacement CMC? I have looked through some of the past questions, but after you go so far back the time element kicks in and you fall asleep at the keyboard. Additionally, when we get to cleaning up the mess what will de-activate and clean the brake fluid that has leaked into and onto the fuse box and down the firewall? Simple Green? Purple Power? Electronic circuit cleaner (I'm not sure that it won't eat the fuse box as well.) Amber colored flame accelerant and a match? I'm not too worried about washing it out as the driver side floor board has a built-in drain hole. (That's on the list as well.)
  3. Thanks, we'll see what I find. I just wish the auto parts stores here carried bigger selections in floor stock.
  4. Thanks!!! That explains what I was confused about. 12, don't worry about the hijack. You got an answer to a question I was going to ask at a later date. When we get this 88 straightened out, I would like to put a 242 into it to go with the AX-15 it already has.
  5. Since I am in a typing mood.......... I am unclear about something with transfer case mode of operation. We now have at the house: 88MJ w/231, 88MJ w/231, 92XJ w/242, 95XJ w/231 and 02WJ w/Selec-Trac. On the 231 you have 2WD and 4WD. Pretty simple. Don't use the 4WD on dry hard surface for long periods. On the 242 you have 2WD, Part Time 4WD and Full Time 4WD. Is the Full Time 4WD mode the same as on a 231 and the Part Time 4WD for differing conditions (dry pavement, wet/snow/ice covered, dry again)? Or do I have the modes backwards? I ask because the 02WJ (I'm relatively sure that it is using a 242 TC) at the house says to use Part Time 4WD for snow/ice/mud and to use the Full Time 4WD for differing road conditions that include dry surface. I'm just a little confused with nomenclature that seems backwards to me.
  6. I got tired of reading 18 pages of search results for "taillights"...... Not very much info for a search of "taillight sockets"....... So here we go: Are there any aftermarket sockets for the MJ taillight housings? I took a quick look at Autozone this afternoon and it seems like there might be one that would work. We are working on a 88 Shorty with plenty of "Previous Owner" additions, subtractions and just enoughs. The sockets in the tails are in pretty sad shape. I am probably going to be doing some new wiring and might as well go all the way to the bulb so that I know it's right.
  7. Well, I went to the mechanic's shop and got a good look at the problem. (Actually he and I worked together as he has been swamped lately and I just don't have a lot of free time.) The roll pin that holds the drive gear in proper place on the bottom of the cam shaft position sensor.......sheared off. Just a little bit left in the shaft. There wasn't much wear on the drive for the oil pump, could have just put a new pin in and put it back, but decided to get a new one.....just because. The oil pump moves freely so we'll see when it gets put back together how things are. My other problem of the wife liking my XJ better than her WJ is on hold for now. Son #3 still wants to find a MJ with an AX-15 which would free up a vehicle...............then maybe I will trade with her.........if she makes a good offer.......maybe. ;)
  8. Well, I played with the "playing dead" GC a little this afternoon. Doesn't start still, codes show P0340 which is listed as possible camshaft position sensor problem, maybe O2 sensor heater problem, or oil pump and sensor problem (isn't that the same sensor?). Since I did get it to start that one time, but had no oil pressure that is the most likely place to start.........when I can get to it. Won't be tonight......Won't be tomorrow or Sunday either. Hmmm, I have to go to work all next week too. Maybe during the next weekend. Hope Momma doesn't mind being on foot for a little while. (He said with his tongue in his cheek.) We'll see what I find.
  9. Brett, I am not sure what you are referencing (dummy oil gauge). The oil pressure indicator in the dash is the normal needle pointer which normally shows movement with engine rpms and oil viscosity. I really hesitate to say that it shows a pressure but rather it shows pressures at different conditions. Not an accurate reading, but rather an indicator of high pressure (start-up and cold engine) then lower after warm-up, movement with rpms, etc. As to oil, I am running Penz. 10W-30 with a Wix filter. It does show a check engine light, but I didn't fool with trying to get codes. I get home so late that I barely have time for evening chores before I run out of daylight. I have to work Friday and Saturday then on Sunday, son #1 is getting married so it'll have to be quick looks that I do once it warms up a little. There is a downside to this.........I told Momma to take my Jeep into town to do grocery shopping tonight. She just said that she likes driving my Jeep (95 XJ AW-4, 231). She said it in a way that sounded suspicious. I may be in trouble.
  10. Been a little cold here lately.........-11 degrees this morning when I left for work. On the way home, I hear from son #3 that Momma's 2002 GC won't start. He's tried jumping the battery, listening for the fuel pump, etc. but no luck. Ok, I look at it when I get home. Pull in and get the keys......Yep, fuel pump primes for a second or two......Try starting......Drag's a little even though the temp made it up to 20 today.....Fires up and starts. Hmmmmmmm? First thing I notice is that there is A LOT of noise from the lifters. Well, duh......the oil has to be like really, really cold...... give it a minute while I check the dipstick (which I knew would show oil on it because this Jeep hasn't been giving me problems). Sure enough, the oil level is right where it should be........Lifters still NOISY! I check the dash and the oil pressure is....... well, the needle hasn't moved since it started. Probably not good, so I shut it down. Looked underneath just to confirm that there is not a puddle nor a trail of oil, sure enough everything looks fine, albeit there is some snow pack under there from the latest 18-23 inches of snow that we got. Tried again, but the engine just turns over and will not fire. I don't think I have ever heard of cold "killing" a oil pump, but this GC is a just a 4.0 motor with a few extra fancy sensors so it shouldn't be too hard to diagnose. I will let it get warmer before I go any further (already dropping to 10 above zero tonite and supposed to be in the 40's and 50's the next few day's) so maybe I can see about it then. Good thing there are extra vehicles at my house. :D Too bad not all of them are drivable. :shake:
  11. Its called taking your foot off the brake pedal, pumping it back and forth and steering the car where you need it to go. Thats why they put ABS on cars because people would freak out and just lock the tires up and wreck all the time, when its as simple as taking your foot off the brake and you can steer again. The above is from one of my knothead son's who was poking around while I was busy.
  12. If you want to see "funny"....... add 1" or more of snow to Springfield, MO drivers. It's best viewed from an overlooking hill, preferably off the roadway where they can't get you. The north exchange (I-44 & US-65) will not be as exciting as the southern used-to-be cloverleaf (US-65 & US-60). The southern one can be viewed from the road that dead-ends in front of that fancy funeral home. I can't remember how to get there, though. I'm lucky I made it out of there alive. :rotf:
  13. I gotta give Doug the credit, but here is the website so that you can check inventory...... http://www.picknpull.com/check_inventory.aspx I have a distant memory of another yard on the other side of 435, but I can't quite recall. I'll send another member a PM to see if he remembers. There are a few more of us in the general area of KC plus a couple of transients that float in and out of town. :D
  14. Before you go breaking stuff, what about removing the fender and unscrew the hinge bolts? Won't the door just fall off at that point?
  15. Yep, I like the black version. :waving:
  16. Eagle, I feel real queasy about this, but.......... All that proves is that the needle in the gauge moves from one limit to the other and that the wire pathway is probably OK from connector to dash cluster. What about a bad sender? Perhaps a check with a real oil pressure device would yield better info? I view the dash gage as an indicator only, not a precision device. Maybe the oil is really sludge and just needs a good draining? Too many other questions to ask without more information.
  17. Try using searchtempest.com for your search. It will also ask you if you want to use autotempest.com which will give you a broader search (dealers, used car dealers, etc.) I know there were two or three in OK just the other day, but I don't remember specifics. Also, look around KC and Lake of the Ozarks. Seems like there have been a couple recently. I know Wichita is a long ways from KC and central MO, but it's a LOT closer than IL. :D Hope that helps. Edit to add: Is this one gone? http://wichita.craigslist.org/cto/1971148948.html Don't forget to search using misspellings such as camanche, commanche, etc. I usually just use Jeep for a search and scan all the results.
  18. What sort of demographics are you looking for? The number of "truly active" members is nothing more than a guess without data pulls from some defined time period and user profiles. Additionally, one might describe the community as a dysfunctional family. :D
  19. For my last Jeep purchase, I watched the shelves at Walmart for clearance radios. Picked up one that has a USB port in the front and a remote which is handy when driving. I don't have an iPod, but I do have flash drives. So I load my CD music onto them and they go into the Jeep. That way I don't have to fool with dropping the front plate to put in a CD and they take up less space. You can get a lot of music onto a 2GB flash drive. It works great for me with the stock wiring and stock speakers. I only needed something that sounded better than my singing voice (which is not good). Also, welcome and nice truck! :wavey:
  20. Son #3 and I went to see Correy this afternoon. He grabbed a seat from Correy's 88XJ while Correy and I talked. Brought it home, cleaned it up and put it in. After learning to lift his big heavy legs, he figured out how to work the rocker mechanism. He is much appreciative. Thanks Correy! :clapping:
  21. Sinkrun, he has the curved power seats in there now. After reading in the DIY and seeing that very picture that akamcbird posted, I think those are called rockers. I don't think that his frame will transfer to the straight manual track units. Thanks though for trying. Correy, are you ready to start tearing the 88 apart? I thought you were holding on until you got the 91 in running shape again. Are the seats in your 88 the rocker type?
  22. What year are they from?
  23. Thanks Correy! We'll grab one and see about getting him fixed up.
  24. Ok fess up Rob, you were surfing Ford stuff again with the old address in the browser cache, weren't you? You have got to stay away from that stuff, it'll make you go blind. :D :D :D Couldn't resist. Well, I tried for about 5 milliseconds and then gave in. :D :D
  25. For those who have been around the block once or twice........... Son #3 has a 92 XJ with power seats. The seat "base/track/whatever the name is" has finally given it's last. We are working on finding another power "base/track/whatever the name is" but can't get to a PNP until maybe Sunday or even a week later. Even then, we won't know if they have any power seats until we get there. Does a manual seat "base/track/whatever the name is" bolt to the floor the same? I can find a manual real close for $30. to hold him over until we find a power one. I am assuming that changing the seat over to the new base is a simple matter of removing the bolts move to the new base and install the bolts, right? He says the rocking chair thing is a pain to drive with. :rotf:
