Any S10 Camper Shellsnon MJ's?
benjy_26 replied to benjy_26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Update: I did a thing. Got it for a hundo and installed it. It fits pretty well, though I have it scooted back a few inches due to my bent tailgate. -
Is the stock tailgate perfectly straight, or does it have some arch to it?

FWIW, the V8 ZJ spings were analogs to the XJ's upcountry springs. Assuming the springs are in comparable condition, you'll see anywhere from .75-1" of lift over your stock springs.

Hello all. I recently bought a shell for my MJ, and I'm having some trouble due to my tailgate. The shell itself fits fine, but does not close due to the fact that my tailgate is bent out near the middle. Have any of you guys straightened out their tailgate? Should I just look for another one? Thanks a bunch!

Do you notice more sag or side to side motion when loaded down? I ask because I recently installed a shell on my MJ and was thinking of building a sleeping/storage platform in the bed for camping.

Is the carrying capacity of your 4" leaves comparable to the stock leaves, or even the Metric Ton springs?

If you want your engine to run cooler, use more water/less coolant and throw a bottle of Red Line Water Wetter in there. -
What are your thoughts on them?

Did you get rear springs from Rusty's?

Thanks! -
Hey y'all. I was wondering if anyone is using a S10 camper shell on their MJ? A shell off of an '88 came up for a hundo locally and I was thinking of throwing it on my '87 SWB MJ.

With bed coating. You're coating your interior.

Floor drain plug.

Sounds like a great reason to throw in a Detroit or similar into it.

Would it really be cheaper?

IIRC, you can *buy* a stroker engine from Oreilley's with a 3 year warranty. That may be an option.

Harvest King brand fluids

I used to use Mobil 1 15/50 VR synth oil in my ZJ with a modded 4.Slow, and it worked well, Rotella works pretty good, too as does Delo. I currently use Delo 5-40 synthetic on my 2.5 because of the cold winter mornings. The only thing to watch for if you're being really careful is zinc content. Our engines were designed in the 70's (I think) when oil had more lubricity additives. As far as RK fluids being good? I bet they're made by one of the few major oil manufacturers and given a generic additive package, which is to say, they're probably a damned sight better than most fluids that were around when our trucks were new and probably on par with most conventional oil out there now. -
Honestly, it'll come down to backspacing. I'm at 2.5" in the front and I rub under lock and full compression on 31's. I used to rub when turning in reverse, but I sanded down the back of my flares (inside the wheel well) and it cleared pretty well.

This is a good cost/benefit exercise, I guess.

Thanks! The seller says that this one has a height adjustment. Apparently, it'll go as high as 21.5". I measured the distance from the bed to the top of the roof at a little over that, so it might end up being pretty close. Again, thanks! -
Yes on all counts. You will have to adapt brakes, shocks, and spring mounting plates, but that's all dependent on if you want to keep it SUA or go SOA.

I used to run 32's on a D35 with a poor man's stroker in a ZJ. It wasn't too happy. I ended up swapping it for a 44A. Thay was slightly better, but not ideal. I think you'll have to shorten the shaft regardless of the amount of lift. I'd also plan on a rear axle swap. An 8.25 or Ford 8.8 would be cool.
