Tailpipe Options... and now Muffler Too!
jpnjim replied to Carl'sMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I turned an offset/offset muffler on it's side, and ran a straight pipe out the back: -
Post up pics when you get them, Now that the factory stuff is gone, I'm wondering what is good/bad in the aftermarket stuff.

Here's the bend for under the fenders that 'good' rockers should have (XJ's in this pic): Here's the cheap, generic JC Whitney rockers (XJ's): Comanche rockers are different from XJ's in that they are closed off on the end (factory rotted piece vs factory replacement rocker): More shots of the factory Comanche replacement rocker:

I've gotten factory rockers for MJ's & XJ's, and they were very nice, tapered ft to back like the originals, with bends on the ft end so they fit underneath (behind) the ft fenders. Then I got generic, aftermarket rockers that were one depth ft to back (so they stuck out too far on the ft), and did not have the bends to tuck in behind the ft fenders. You can't get factory rockers from Mopar any more :( (I don't know if factory XJ rockers are available), but hopefully some of the aftermarket ones are better quality/fit than the ones I got (sourced from JC Whitney at the time).

:clapping: Congrats Pete! (would this be a bad time to ask them to keep one of your Jeeps in their yard ;) )

One sunny day in January, 2013 an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue , where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama." The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here." The old man said, "Okay", and walked away. The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama." The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here." The man thanked him and, again, just walked away. The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama." The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I've told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?" The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it." The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."

Yeah, our stock bumpers don't really make good pull points.

How are the cab corners? I hate to see MJ's get chopped up, but if cutting it anyway, I could use a spare set.

'Grandpa Jeep': viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21028 had 31k when I bought it in January (mileage verified by title, 15+ years of receipts & inspection sticker paperwork) 'her' ZJ died within a week of buying this, so it's been my daily driver since, and now has clicked past 35k miles. I'm trying to keep it 'stockish', and 2wd. Hopefully it will get put away before the snow flies again this year.

It's a soup can on someone's shelf in China by now. :dunno: I had access to a big metal brake and all the steel I wanted back when I tossed it. (I don't anymore  )

I don't know if that was directed at me, but that MJ died, so that others could live. :(

The 'cage' was made ghetto-fabbed out of a YJ & CJ factory bar, cut down, pieced together in the middle with similar sized tubing (forget what size now). I do remember ghetto-stick welding it with my old buzz box in the rain :ack: (actually thunder & lightning the night before a trail run  ). Just flat plated & bolted to the bed floor (= minimal actual protection) The tire was held onto the cage with 2 spare (rear axle) U-bolts (fine thread 1/2" U-bolts are the same thread as 1/2" lug nuts), and the high lift was dropped into a metal sleeve, also bolted to the cage with axle U-bolts. (who says you can't re-use them ;) ). I originally intended to make a canvas cover for it, but never got around to it.

I've posted this before, but I built a type of cage/rack in my old MJ (tho the cage & rack were separate): There was a space on the rack for a big cooler, two 35" spares (standing up), gas & water cans, air tanks, and two 'missile cases' at the tailgate (one filled with fluids, the other spares): The big tool box at front could carry whatever tools, parts & supplies didn't fit in the missile cases (even brought a spare BA 10-5 with me once  ). When wheeling, I'd leave the 2nd spare tire back at base camp (chained to a tree if I was worried about it), put the tire up on the cage (along with the high lift), so the only thing blocking my rearward view was the big cooler (that was directly behind me, and not really in the way).

1960's-70's Hemi & 440 4spd Mopars had D60's, in the right widths, and bolt pattern: This 69' B-body 60 was $495 with 4.56's, 1.5" axle shafts & a 'good' Powerlock.... 15 years ago. Uncut it had 11" of clearance on 35's (it's on 255/85-16's now): The majority of time I ran this axle was with 33" Boggers (pretty much 32" tall), and 33" TSL's (almost 34"). I did get hung up, but the bottom is ramped, so more often than not it would grind/slide up and over rocks & stumps. Honestly, I got hung up more with my XJ's 8.25" & 31's/32's. For me, hitting a flat surface with the flat face of an uncut 8.25 was like hitting the STOP button :ack: The worst thing about running a 5 on 4.5" D60 rear is there isn't an easy 5 on 4.5" ft axle that can balance it's strength up front. I like 8.25's for 31-35's, but I would really want to do something about the flat face if it was in a wheeling rig. Personally, I would take an XJ/MJ D44 over an 8.8". The edge for strength may go to an 8.8", but since we're talking about Jeeps running HP30 ft's, there are advantages that 44's have (to me anyway) that outweigh the xx% strength advantage for a 8.8.

The site we went to last week was a KOA, everyone was awesome, and even the stuff at the little general store was reasonably priced/not inflated. Did you decide what you were gonna do?
