  1. I am a big advocate of having someone shake the wheel and looking for play in the joints. In my old elimintor, with even the small lift it ended up putting undue stress on the susp joints, and with the old steel, I ended up elongating my trackbar mount on the axle end. I let it fly for awhile, until i couldnt go safely above 45 MPH  . Had to weld a hardened steel washer on to correct the mount, and everything was number one a-ok. :D Rob L.
  2. I've gotten a couple PM's about selling it whole. If nothing comes of it, i will let you guys know. Rob L.
  3. dunl, Trust Pete when he says keep your eyes out for a donor vehicle. It took me 2 weeks of watching craigslist like a hawk, but I currently have a '96 XJ 2.5L 5-speed with a Non disconnect D30 with 290 u-joints(the bigger ones), and a chry co 8.25, complete with a set of 4.10 gears in my driveway. Just a matter of collecting the parts, and putting it together. The front axles will be a direct swap. And for the XJ's SOA design, in my plans to do the SOA anyway, I will have to re-weld the perches even if i were to use the stock d35 with the lift. Ideally, I am going to do a SOA, with the Rubicon Express lift. I am in the same boat as you. Money is tight, but I want to do this right. So I am just collecting parts at the moment. And you can always sell off whats left for your donor, and re-coup some of the investment. Plan it out, do it right. A little bit of sluthing, and some attention to classifieds and craigslist go a long way!!! :D Rob L.
  4. Pete, "does not a decent wheeler make" ? Is yoda holding you hostage? Words up mixed got you? :rotfl2: Rob L.
  5. I was just going to take the axles and suspension components in the front, other than that, i think thats about it. Floors have some holes, but the outside is pretty good shape. I don't think the doors fenders and clip are original, they look to have been repainted. 4 cyl runs like a top, shifted pretty darn good just lot driving.I was kinda hoping to make a little money parting it out, but if i can wash my hands of it quick, that'd be cool with me. You guys interested in getting the whole thing minus axles? Rob L.
  6. It might. I still have to get into the garage. I need to kinda comb through it at the moment. I am trying to sell it as whole as possible, but might part it out locally. If it has the washers I will let you know. Rob L.
  7. Sorry, idiot light cluster. Base model Sport 4x4. 2.5L 5 speed. Where are ya located in Chicagoland? Rob L.
  8. Finally got my axle donor home on sunday. A 4 hour roundtrip turned into a 9.5 hour funfest. I ended up borrowing a tandem axle flatbed car trailer from a co-worker, and a friend and his truck for the trip. After removing a race car and hooking up the trailer, pinning in the ramps, we were off. Raining at a good clip the whole time. Then about 30 minutes in, we were flagged down by someone informing us we had lost a ramp about a mile back. Ugh. don't ask me how a large steel ramp, under a lip, pinned and clipped in, falls off a trailer :dunno: . All went pretty well the rest of the way there. Drove the '96 XJ 2dr onto the trailer, and shored it up. Got back on the interstate. Drove a little while, and pulled over and checked all of the tires and straps. About an hour later, the truck started to rumble. Buddy's first thought was misfire, but one peer into the passenger mirror told me different. Massive Blowout on p/s rear the trailer. We pulled over, and scoped it out, and i told him to pull it ahead to get us on asphalt so we could get to jacking. No big deal thats what the trailer spare is for  . As soon as i got out again, the front tire on the trailer on the p/s (in what could only be considered a big FU :fs1: ) let loose all of its air as i watched the chuff of moisture explode out. After some head scratching, some redneck ingenuity, we ended up with the spare on the trailer to replace the blowout, the flat front tire on the rear of the XJ, and the rear XJ tire on the front of the trailer. Only took an hour and a half on the side of a 6 lane 65MPH highway in the pouring rain. Just had to loose the trailer fender, marker lights, and some excess items. My co-worker had a good laugh when i gave him back the trailer. I had more parts of the trailer in the truck than actually attached to it! But, I have my new set of 4.10's sitting in the driveway  , awaiting transplant... I am unsure of what i am going to do with the rest of the XJ at the moment, but its all mine... Had to custom make a windshield for the time being though... which reminds me, i should go to the store and get some more saran wrap... :D Rob L.
  9. Pete, so your saying the 3.07's sitting underneath the Mj right now aren't worth anything? :D Man, I thought those were gold... :rotfl2: Rob L.
  10. Need i say more? Just found this, just posting it if anyone hasn't seen it. 4BT cummins, NV4500HD out of a Cummins ram. Rob L. P.S. Check out some of the comanche commercials from the 80's too. I love you tube!
  11. Should, but gearing is the biggest concern... I don't think there were any design changes over the short jeep MJ lifespan. Rob L.
  12. Well, good news for all here. Just got back from looking at it. Verified (by the axle id tags anyway) 4.10 gears!!!! :clapping: This thing is really clean. I am going to have to trailer it home though. The listing is this: I have 1996 clean titled jeep cherokee sport, two doors, 4 cylinder engine. Manual shift gear. has about 124,000 miles. Drives and run good, i have to jump start it every time I start it so it needs battery, also needs front windshield. and a head liner. the interior of the car is stripped out, I have all the parts just needs restoring. the body is in ok condition no rust, need muffler work. and no major body damage. I am not willing to go any less cause the junk yard will give me about this price for it. do not call me to ask what is wrong with it. cause I just stated everything. Pic isnt actual, but this is a carbon copy of what it looks like. Back to things at hand: Black, and the body is rust free! Interior is completely apart, but it starts and runs. Runs great too! Be a shame taking it apart. Would drive it home but the windshield is gone, not just cracked. I left him with $100 to hold it and plan on getting it next weekend. I will wait until i have it to start selling parts. I might have someone interested in buying it and throwing axles under it for a driver. Its that good. Well, time to make dinner and revell in my purchase. Newer D30 and 27 spline 8.25 with 4.10 gears!!!! Yes! Anyone in the Wi/IL area interesting in helping me pick this thing up? I have the means to put a car trailer behind the 4.0L ZJ, but i think i might be pushing the limit. Rob L.
  13. Nope, no dice. 4 speed truck, ended up being 3.55's. I did point him our way to part out the truck and find a new owner. Idid find a set of axles though. Look at my '96 cherokee post for the update. Rob L.
  14. Just got the vin from the guy and ran it to the jeep dealer. 4.10's, D30 front, with a chryco 8.25 rear  ...! I am gone. Let you guys know how it looks tonight! Rob L.
  15. NICE!!! Thanks, this should help a lot. Really! Thanks! Good info! Rob L.
  16. Thanks, I was just curious. There is someone around my area selling a 2 door XJ minus headliner, and a few interior parts for $800 complete with clean title. Worth a look. Just asking about the trans for re-sale purposes... I'm on it Pete 8) . Gotta give me more credit than that...But thanks for keeping an eye on me. :dunce: Just figured it would be easy to re-coupe the cost of the XJ if it has the desired axles... :brows: Thanks again, Rob L.
  17. Well, not really anything more than that. Does anyone know the stock gear ratios for a '96 XJ 2door, 2.5L MT 4x4? Manual trans options? Looking at a parts cherokee(For the trans and axles), they haven't gotten back to me yet as to the specifics. don't know 4 or 5 speed. Thanks in advance, Rob L.
  18. I think i have one of those sentinels sitting in a box at ma's. Anyone ever seen one in action? I would imagine it would be a pain in the @$$ to wire and plumb all of that crap... Wagoneer (XJ) orginal stuff correct? Rob L.
  19. Maybe someone rigged it into a Mj and he pulled it thinking it was O.E. :dunno: Rob L.
  20. Always good to add another body to the madness. Welcome. Rob L.
  21. Yeah, the one i sold to alex(girs86mj, i believe) was the eliminator. If you run his vin it will show as a true original 4x4 eliminator. Great truck when i bought it, but I had to replace all of the body panels, doors, the body was in bad shape. Maaco paint job helped, but instead of a 100 footer, turned it into a 25 footer. The paint came out very sub-par. I actually sold all of my parts to alex too. I hope he's doing good, and the truck is treating him well. Rob L.
  22. Crap. Just called to double check everything, asked him how he checked the gear ratio. Said he had a book that told him 4 cyl 4 speeds came with 4.10's. Double crap. Well, he said he'll pull the cover and count teeth at this point and get back to me. Lets hope his book is right, and possibly these gears were an option checked off. Oh yeah, agreed price of $250 if everything is 10-4. Keep yer fingers crossed for me! Rob L.
  23. Saweet. Thanks. I will have to call him back. Maybe if i offer to help take the axles out he will come down on the price. Or i could just buy the whole darn truck for $500. Too bad i don't have the room. So... front axle plans down! Rear to go. Rob L.
  24. DEFINEATELY plan on double and trip checking the ratio. Seems like he knows what he's talking about, he has been building jeeps for a long time. Or so he says. Knew what I was talking about when i started rambling about the 8.25...etc. So hopefully he doesn't end up being wrong. Would be nice to get a replacement front axle and whatnot with matching rear for time being. If he does have a 8.25 on the side, just a bonus. So far, around here, everywhere ive been calling is asking about $750-900 for a set of d30/8.25's so this is just cheap enough to get me off the ground, well back on it anyway, rolling. Am i correct with the later model axleshaft swap? Been awhile since i have been in the jeep scene, just need some refreshers. But hey, If i can get a workable(shaft swap req'd) d30 with the gears i want, thats half the battle, without having to regear. Rob L.
  25. Given the chance, would you buy a dana 30/35c combo with 4.10's, for $275? :dunno: There is someone parting out an '86 MJ 2.5L 4x4 4 speed by me, and thats what he's asking for the set, hub to hub. He said hes very negotiable though, leads me to believe there is even more room in there. I am thinking about offering $200. I am just looking to get the taste of those 3.07's out of my mouth. :ack: He also said he might have an 8.25 sitting in storage  , most likely different gears. Might pick 'em up, and do the 8.25 later. I can switch in the later axleshafts on the d30 to bring it up to par, no? Big question though, should i buy? Would you buy? Thanks, Rob L.
