Now...what the heck am I going to do with this thing.... Step 1 is to figure out the wiring since I can't get a hold of any service manuals for this particular model/year/engine. Anyone have any buddies in Japan?
-
Bingo! Mazda MZR-CD 2.0L common rail turbo diesel out of a 2005 Mazda Bongo RWD van.
-
Not a 2.0 CRD, although I did try to get my hands on one...way too expensive.
-
Not a Volvo. Not a GW4D20. Those nice little engines, though.
-
Nope. It's a 2.0L, 4 cylinder engine, BTW. The block was used in a few passenger vehicles in North America back in the 80's. The block has basically remained the same with different internals and new technology slapped on it throughout the years.
-
Not a Mitsubishi and not quite that large of an engine.
-
No, but I believe this engine is used in a couple of Kia vehicles in Europe and Japan...maybe Australia, too.
-
Nope! We're in the right country of origin, though.
-
Close, but no cigar. Perkins and the manufacturer of this engine did have a business relationship at one point. Not a Nissan. Getting closer, but not a Perkins. This engine, in its current form, was never offered in any cars/trucks in North America. Nah, it's a manual. Doesn't have the shifter on top of the trans - it's a cables/linkage shift setup. Turbo is a variable geometry turbo and it is newer than 1995. Common-rail, direct injection: Image Not Found Bellhousing: Image Not Found Shift linkage: Image Not Found Another shot of the turbo: Image Not Found

Nope. Getting closer though.
-
Nope! But it is foreign.
-
I know what it is. Just wanted to see if there were any other savvy diesel people out there.
-
That's my guard squirrel. I had to go to a rough part of town to get this.

So I found this: Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found And I bought it. Thinking about putting it in an MJ. Anyone have any idea on the make and model of this little guy?

I went biblical with Ezekiel. It's unique, but not manly enough. My GF calls him Bubby, which has morphed into Bubbles, Bubblecakes, Bubblewubble, etc.
-
Another good one - Bruiser
-
Name him Bear...because that's what he looks like.

Except it won't be that cool. Look at me, I swapped in an expensive, underpowered and unreliable engine into my YJ, The YJ never actually offered this engine, but two other Jeep models of the same era did! Again - to each their own. I bet only a select few will understand why I'm transplanting the engine that I am into my '92MJ...
-
Don't blame you
-
Was there a reason he wanted to spend all the time and effort swapping in that turd as opposed to any of the other low-cost diesel options out there? It seems like the 2.1 diesel can be a reliable engine if very well maintained, but as far as diesel reliability goes, it just plain sucks.
-
Interesting choice for a swap. That'd be about the last diesel I'd want to swap into a YJ...except maybe the GM 5.7 diesel abomination... But to each their own...

To Those Of You Driving Newer Vehicles, How Do You Manage Driving An Mj?

Won't disagree with you there - the Laredo trim package had a decent looking interior. Unfortunately, less than 5% of all MJs ever made actually had that trim package. Let's look at a much more common interior offering: Yea, not so sexy... -

No offense but I don't get any of these comments. I think the interior looks great and they do look vintage. The worst thing you could do is rip it out and try to modernize it by installing a late model xj interior. I replaced my bench with buckets but only because I was afraid I would get rear ended and my head would go through the back window. These arent new 2013 trucks. To each their own. The interior reminds me of the one in the Pontiac Fiero - another interior I don't like the styling of. Seems like they were trying to go for that futuristic look, but failed big time. I did rip out the interior on my '88MJ supercharged project and put in a '99XJ interior. The layout and functionality of the newer style XJs is leaps and bounds above the older MJ/XJs. Problem is that the newer XJ interior swap requires time and resources - two things I'm short on at the moment. -

I just need power locks and windows. Seems silly to me that just about every XJ at the time was offered with power locks/windows, but only a handful of MJs got them. I need to have creature comforts. Long drives with a siberian husky constantly popping up to stick his head out the window demands that. Leaning over to roll down/up the window is dangerous for both myself and dog.
