Clutch/Slave Cylinder Problems
mjeff87 replied to utahmj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, I'm talking about the 2 hard lines that go into the slave inside the bell. You push them in (with O-rings attached) then slide the little U shaped retainer clips through the small holes to hold the lines in. One of mine the clip fell out and the line popped back out. But, you would likely see alot of clutch fluid leaking out of the bell if that were your case. If you're positive you're not leaking, you just need to keep bleeding it, or your master is bad. I know there are different clutch masters depending on vehicle (YJ/TJ/XJ-MJ) and different year ranges that have a different effective pushrod length according to the setup. Did your new master specify it was for an XJ/MJ with your year and type of driveline? You *might* just have the wrong master installed and don't have enough throw on the pushrod to disengage the clutch fully.- 35 replies

Clutch/Slave Cylinder Problems
mjeff87 replied to utahmj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When you put the new slave/throwout in, did you leave the little plastic straps on (and TO compressed)? Those straps are designed to snap when you first engage the new clutch to bleed it. If the straps weren't there, you might have accidentally pushed a bunch of air back through the system. Also, it is possible that one (or both) of the hard lines that attach to the TO might have popped out after install. Happened to me once, and I was not a happy camper. Had to pull the tranny back off to figure out what happened, and I swapped out the cheezy little "U" clips that come with the kit with small cotter pins of the same diameter. I bent the ends of the pins back around to make sure they wouldn't ever slip back out.- 35 replies

I know Greg (WahooSteeler) was looking for a longbed awhile ago.....not sure if he found one, or would be interested in that one

Well, this focus is giving me the opportunity to wrench a little bit, lol. Got the knuckle swapped in ok, but it has recently developed a case of not idling very well. The IAC is going bad I supposed, so I grabbed one at the junkyard from a 2002 model. After wrestling around with it for 2 freaking hours I got mine out.....and it's a different style than the one I got at the yard. Crap. So I cleaned the heck out of mine and spent another hour or so reinstalling it (seriously, it's in the most god awful place an IAC could ever be put...google it for some fun and laughs). It's a little better, doesn't stall at a stop, but it's still idling at around 575-600. I also pulled the TB off and cleaned the heck out of it too. New problem is the front crank seal is shot and it's leaking oil like the Exxon Valdez. I was planning to put a new timing belt on it at some point, but that's been accelerated to this weekend, since I have to pull the whole front end of the motor off to replace the leaking seal. I'm not doing all that work twice, so I'm doing it all on Sunday along with a new serpentine belt, belt tensioner, idler pulley and valve cover gasket. Fun times.

We're in for Sunday evening....something dinner-ish would be nice. Cause, we need to eat dinner, lol. PM inbound with my digits.

Reminds me of me in my (much) younger days......I took an old B&S lawnmower engine, ground off a cam lobe, threaded an air fitting into the spark plug hole and jimmied up a V-belt pulley to the end of the crank (blade removed). Ran the belt to an old electric motor, and bolted the whole mess to a piece of 2x10 and plugged it in. It actually ran, for about a minute, and then self destructed right there on my basement floor. A teenage boy with nothing better to do and a box of tools and spare parts can be a dangerous thing. Lucky I didn't kill myself.

I confirmed with my wife that we are coming down on Sunday and leaving on Friday. We should be in town early afternoon, and we can make plans for Disney Springs that night, I think........let me check with her to make sure she doesn't have something already planned for that first night, lol.

I broke off the broke off the threads on #6 plug inside the head. Center porcelain came out clean but the threaded part is firmly lodged in the head threads.

Obviously, your MJ has to be named Ben Welcome to the club, Mr. Adams

You have the same keen eye for details that I do Pete. That Stude 4x4 pickup and the Case made me weak in the knees.

Got the old bearing and hub pressed out and the new ones pressed into the spare knuckle after work tonight. What an incredibly stupid design that took way too long to do. The bearing presses in from the back side of the knuckle and is held captive by a 3" snap ring. The hub presses into the inner bearing race from the front side of the knuckle and is only held captive via the axle nut once it's all installed. It wouldn't be so bad except you need a very specific diameter something or other that press s on the outer race bearing (which is only about 1/32" thick) but not so large OD that it fits inside the hole in the outer knuckle. I did not possess such a tool, so I ended up pressing the inner guts out of the bearing and then finding something (a 1-13/16" 3/4" drive impact socket) to press on the remnants of the inner race to push it out. And ended up I bedding said socket firmly into the knuckle....until I beat it out with a hammer. Anywho, it's all done, and I'll swap the whole knuckle in tomorrow after work.

SVT....nice

Probably, yeah. But at this point I'm pretty much committed to pulling the head. I've known all along that it's the right thing that needs to be done. I was just trying to avoid it because it's such a PITA, but it's gotta be done.

Extremely clean. Couple little spots on the carpet (which I'll get gone) and that's it. And rust? We don't have rust here in Virginia......LOL. It has 4 almost brand new tires on it, but I just noticed the passenger rear tire is a different brand than the others. My OCD is not going to permit that long term, but for now it's fine. Funny thing, on the drive home I stopped to fill the tank. When I got back in it, I had a no-crank situation. Thought about it for a second, then got out and reached under the dash and pushed the clutch safety switch plunger in with my finger and it cranked right up. And then the PO's "attempt" to fix the problem fell off onto the floor. I had to laugh......these clutch switches are notorious for failing (my first Focus had the problem as well). So I drove home, popped off the switch connector and installed a short jumper wire and taped it up. Viola.....permanently fixed. Here's how the PO tried to fix it, by rigging up a homebrew thingy attached to the clutch pedal arm with a ziptie

Welp, I bought another one 2001, 5 speed with the 2.0 Zetec, 160K miles. Needs a passenger side front wheel bearing (fixing that tonight/tomorrow), and a good service done to it (LOF, plugs, tranny fluid change, etc.). It does have a slow leak from the front crank seal, but I'm not going to worry about that until I change the timing belt (unknown history on it, just changing it for peace of mind) since you have to pull that all off to get to the seal. Will do it all in one shot, someday in the not-too-distant future. I got it titled/registered/plated/insured today but am not driving it until I swap the bearing out. It is very driveable (I drove it home from the PO's house about a half hour away), I just don't want to stress the bad bearing out any more than it already is (LOUD). I'll continue this thread with updates on it as I work on it, while I'm also working on repairing/replacing the head on my KJ

I don't think we figured that out yet. I know, rookie mistake. Our main focus is going to be Epcot, because of the Food and Wine festival. We do want to see the new Star Wars section, and go to Animal Kingdom (we didn't get there last year). Plus I think we're going to take one day and just stay on the hotel property....last year we stayed at Riverside and there was alot of stuff to do on property but we didn't do any of it because we were so fixated on getting into the different parks.

That might have been an option, until the second shop got their Snap-on spiral extractor stuck inside the plug threads (which are stuck in the head) LOL. I'm just going to bite the bullet and pull the head off, along with about 2/3 of the rest of the engine to get to it.
-
I'm in for whatever, but won't have any wheels to get around in. Wherever we meet up would need to be cab-able/uber-able from Caribbean Beach property (just south of Epcot). I think we're there Sunday-Thursday.

Well, change #54972683.....I took the Honda back to the guy, it ended up being a pile. Picked up another Focus (2001) from a guy for relatively cheap. It is immaculate inside and out, but needs a couple quick things done to it. I need to swap a new bearing/hub on the passenger front (I have 4 brand new sets of them sitting in the garage), which is why he was selling it. A shop quoted him $900 for the job, and he just had the radiator and e-fans replaced for $300 and didn't want to spend any more money on it. Works for me. I'll press a new hub/bearing into one of the spare knuckles I have sitting around tonight after work, then swap the whole knuckle out tomorrow night. We have to go out of town this weekend, so I probably won't get anything else done to it, but I got it titled/plated/insured this morning so it's ready to go. It drives fine now, but the bearing definately needs replaced and I don't want to drive much on it until I do, just as a safety thing. Now, on to getting the head pulled off the KJ (probably next weekend) to see what needs done to fix it.

fender flare bracket studs
mjeff87 replied to tarmac2dirt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I drilled out the stud remnants and used small (1/4" IIRC) stainless hex bolts, washers and nylock nuts. It was kind of a pain getting everything lined up/threaded/tightened but it worked great and was cheap. LOL. -
Holy crap. Injectors for these things are like $6-700 each. That might explain the "great" asking price for the vehicle, lol.
-
In my wanderings to find a cheap replacement vehicle for my dead KJ, I came across a CRD KJ for relatively short money. Looks nice from the pics, but the ad says it "needs fuel injectors". Me not knowing anything about the 2.8 oil burner, how big of a red flag is that? Seems to me that ALL of the injectors wouldn't go bad at the same time, so I'm thinking there's a larger underlying issue (there always is......). What would y'all get out of reading that? I haven't called the guy about it, and I probably won't, but I'm curious. Thanks

For those of you who are still using PB, they are still jerking their customers around. I deleted my account a long time ago and will never go back, y'all might want to think about it. Reading on another forum (Pirate) they are starting to blur your pics and/or put giant PB watermarks across them (covering up most of the important parts of your pics). They have also started to implement a new 25MB "cap" on free accounts. LOL. They are trying to bully folks into paying $6.99/month for their "premium" plan for increased storage space. They didn't learn anything from the first debacle.

I hate Facebook. I will be member #1 on your new forum, should you decide to proceed. I like poutine, a few Canadian beers, and I've been to Niagra Falls (Canuck side) and Halifax. I qualify, lol. PM me with membership info when you're ready, lol.

I did, lol. And passed on the WJ too. Ended up picking up an 04 Honda Accord from a guy in my subdivision. It's not a panty dropper, needs a couple hundred worth of maintenance done to it, has a small dent in the passenger side front fender, and needs a good deep cleaning. But the driveline is rock solid, gets about 8000 mpg, and was only $2K. Plus, the owner lives just down the street from me so if crap goes sideways (it won't), he knows I'll be knocking on his door in a hot minute, lol.
