Belt wandering and whining, need help. With Video.
Timmaay replied to Timmaay's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Brain phart - thinking power steering pump pulley since I have been working that lately. But yeah, must be the water pump bearings. Was it a "remanufactured" pump? They are well known for being bad right out of the box, even directly from Mopar. You know I can't remember if it was a remanufactured or not. Something tells me it was a new one though. Well, I know what I'm working on tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it goes after I try another pump. Thanks for all the help so far guys  I'm sure we'll get it done. -

I didn't press on the pulley, I just tightened the bolts down. It was a non-sledge event :D And yeah I can get a new pump since it came with a lifetime warranty. -

Yeah the belt was actually a little loose before I got the I got the gauge to set the correct tension. So I don't think over-tightening was the cause. I originally thought that the noise was coming from my old water pump bearings, so I replaced it with this waterpump I have now. The initial test drive was promising, for the first ten miles everything was silent. Then the noise came back :wall: . So maybe I just got a bad pump. -

I didn't check the pulleys this time but when I put the waterpump on I checked all the pulleys. I'm pretty sure they were all good. It's not a new waterpump pulley, I don't think they sell new ones. Yes it is good and tight. the water pump looked newer to me, and i thought you said you replaced the water pump. obviously the pulley is replaced as a unit with the water pump all as one. not serperate. Sorry for the confusion. Yes, the waterpump is new, the waterpump pulley is not. This pump I bought from NAPA didn't come with a new pulley. -
I'm looking at this page with that exact laptop except mines black. So far I like it. Only problem is my battery is dead and won't take a charge. It's probably still under warranty I just haven't called em yet.

Using this trick confirmed that it is coming from the waterpump area... -

Ok, I put on a brand new idler pulley and bearing; the noise is still there. Although the new pulley doesn't wobble at all like the previous one. Any more ideas? :hmm: -

Thanks for the advice, but I just bought the bearing you said (6203 with the 17mm) and it doesn't fit  you must have gotten the sizes flipped, or mine is different. -
I need help with what is causing my belt to wander around and cause that annoying whine. Here are some symptoms: It only whines at idle, completely goes away with any throttle. Only whines when engine is warmed up. Belt tension is 150lbs (verified with Krikit II). The harmonic ballancer, AC, and waterpump pulley's appear to spin perfectly true. The idler pulley and power steering seem to have slight wobbles. Here is the video:

Ok. Thanks guys.

Where can I buy a new water pump pulley? I have looked online at Napa, Kragen, Autozone, and Rock Auto; they don't seem to carry it.

I am guessing you are not intending to put any lift on it and go much bigger on the tires, but staying stock and just going to a 30" tire. That being said, there are a hundred choices obviously, and depends mostly on how you plan to use them. Pavement pounding only, light off-road, heavy off-road? With no lift, stock size tires (for now :brows: ) I ASSume you are most on-road. Then of course there is always the appearance factor for mall crawling. That being said, if you are going to spend the money on new and want a high end tire, the 30" Bridgestones I had that are in my pic were awesome. Best truck A/T tire I've ever had in overall performance. Super quiet, VERY nice ride, aggressive tread and great looking IMHO. They were the Dueler A/T Revo's. They have regular Dueler A/Ts, but the Revos are a completely different tread. I have 31 BFGs right now and when they need to be replaced I will definitely get another set of Revos. If budget is a concern, lot's of good off-brand stuff available, or with a little patience find a good used set of something, although 30" tires seem harder to come by used. Yeah, no lift right now, maybe something later on. At this point, It will be on mostly pavement driving with some light off-road. I'm fine with minor rubbing at full lock. I have a friend who can get me 30% off Firestone/Bridgestone tires. :clapping: Unless I can find some good used tires, I will get some new Bridge or Firestones. Like I said, eventually I plan on getting a lift, gears, and bigger tires, etc. But for right now I just want these tires to be slightly oversized and good for both pavement and offroad.

Bought the rims. Couple of them had light curb rash, but I cleaned that up pretty good with a file. However, the rims have some corrosion on the back that I can't get off. What is the best way to remove it? I don't think I'm going to put the 235s on these rims. I don't like the way that it will have to fit. Sounds like a good excuse to buy some new tires. :brows: Recommendations?

Awesome! Thanks Wahoo. I will post some pics when/if I get em.

Did some searching and couldn't find what I needed so.... I'm thinking about picking up some canyon rims off a 2000 TJ. I believe that they are 15x8, can anyone confirm this? I have 235/75/15 tires on the stock 15x7 rims now, will the same tires fit on the new canyons? And will back spacing be a problem? The spare tire on one of the new rims is a 30x9.50x15...

Yep, that's the diy I used. The only thing I had trouble with is when he is talking about using the hobby knife, he never actually says what to remove. Now I know (after warping one speedo) he is referring to the little c clip on the end of the numbers. I found that a good and sharp pair of needle nose pliers works best for the removal of that clip.

I'm liking the license plate. 8) Keep us up to date with all the updates and pictures!

Looks like one of those wooden bead seat cover things.

Good point. It's just like the dollar store...You can buy four AA batteries for a $1... or you can buy two AA batteries for $1. :rotf:

I have the same problem and am thinking about making my own clip or just some other way to hold it on. Half of an alligator clip secured to the cable with a special notch to fit the speedo is the current idea.

What's all involved in replacing one? I too broke the clip off of mine
