  1. Okay, they skipped a tooth.. so now that's fixed. Spark plugs...oh yeah, they were changed....2 out of 6. Like my wife says...."it probably died because of the loose ignition switch plug, but because they started messing with everything else...."
  2. Okay, I THINK the distributor was off by 180, but now that I have the notch on the crank pulley lined up with the timing marks, the rotor is between #1 and #4 on the cap. Figured I'd ask how to fix this before I mess something up or do it the hard way. I assume I can just loosen the bolts and rotate it? Thanks so far.
  3. Sold for a more built rig. :waving:

    Just this one and viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17906
  5. I hate being internet taught. :( Good news is that after it was pointed out that I had the dimmer switch instead of the ignition, I found one plug loose. In it went, and on came gauges. Now it is spitting every few seconds, trying to start. I can hear the fuel pump and smell gas. But she doesn't want to catch...any ideas? Thanks for all the help so far.
  6. More success...I changed out fuses, and the blower motor, signals, hazards and roll bar lights work now, with the key on.
  7. If it's a Renix (1986 thru 1990) the ECU is under the dashboard, right over the driver's right foot. There's a bunch of wires in/on the steering column. If they hot-wired it when they stole it (which is what usually happens), that's almost certainly the problem. Keep in mind that the key does NOT operate the ignition switch. The actual switch is down at the base of the steering column. The key operates a linkage rod, which in turn operates the actual switch. If either the key mechanism (not the lock cylinder itself, but the bits that the cylinder turns) or the operating rod got mangled, the rod may not be turning the switch on when you turn the key. Okay....so I'm under there. I should be seeing the rod move when I turn the key, right?

  10. Cool....I guess that's tomorrow's job. :)
  11. Ignition switch sounds likely, as I just bypassed the fuel pump via the pins in the relay section. Hummed great. If it was a failed ignition switch, the engine would think it is turned off - even if the starter doesn't. That would explain why it died on the PO halfway out of the garage. And no matter what I do, it will continue to think it is turned off, right?
  12. Okay, I have it here and I can't hear the pump. The gauges don't move at all when I turn the key, even though the engine cranks. So, no longer think it is the fuel pump. I believe that when the key is turned, the starter is engaging, but the truck doesn't know the key is on. Is that possible? ECU fried?
  13. Do these have a habit of failing? They do on ZJ's, which is why I would do it....ease of replacement.
  14. Is it possible to do this on an MJ? http://jeephorizons.com/tech/zj_fuel_pump.html

    new Comanche.....

It's not the cps, cause I replaced that at the previous owners trying to start it. I think it is the fuel pump. Wheels, sadly, did not come with it. :( $800 is cheap, but I never said the guy was stupid. :D :D Rust on the lower panels and cab corners, floors are non-existant but overall it's good. Interior is a little beat.
  16. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17946 Thanks for the help guys...

No, there is a method to my madness....the guys will be swarming the truck. :) and worst case scenario is a son-in-law who likes jeeps. :clapping: Her sister had to get into the shot. Not bad for a $500 upgrade, eh?

Yes, it would be for HER. :clapping: That's how you do it.
  20. Okay, those things help. I'm going to get it towed home tomorrow. I'll try to get more pics then. :D
  21. Depends on where you are. We have VERY few jeeps up here compared to down south, and there is STILL a guy trying to get rid of a front-damaged 98 for $600.

    new Comanche.....

Well, bought an Eliminator for my 15 year old daughter in the spring: plan was to lift it, get a roll bar, lights, repaint it, etc. Then I found this and bought it yesterday (bragging pics): Doesn't start, but I'm working on it. For $800, I'm not complaining. :clapping:
