2WD MJ BA10/5 -> 4WD XJ AW4/NP231/Dana30?

Any general advice for dropping the tranny...by myself, without a tranny jack? I have the Rear Driveshaft out and I think everything disconnected (cables, stick shifter, etc) from the tranny as best I can tell... I unbolted the Exhaust from the Manifold, but it appeared to be "rusted" on and I didn't want to bust it, so the whole exhaust is on still. I have 6 Ton Jack stands at the front and rear of the tranny and a 3 ton Floor Jack in the middle (with a 4x4 since my jack isn't tall enough). I unbolted the 8 bolts to the cross member to the frame, but not the ones connecting the tranny directly to the cross member (since they seemed like a pain in the butt to remove and I was hoping I could drop the tranny while still connected to the member.) Oh Yah, I drained the tranny fluid before I started anything...what I pain... I had to grind down a Hex socket thing I had so it was Square and fit the drain plug hole... took forever with a Dremel and grinding stone. I haven't yet unbolted the tranny from the engine, but assuming I've done everything else I need first. So if I unbolt and then the tranny droops down to sit on the Jack Stands, how much does it weigh and will I be able to slide it back and off the stands and onto the floor by myself? Anything big I'm missing, or words of wisdom before I start back up tomorrow? Wade -

Painted Emblems? Repaint or Replace?
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
MEK Stuff didn't touch the paint either... Soaked, rubbed, Soaked, nada, nothing... I finally took a wire wheel to a couple of the letters of the Comanche badge and it finally took the black paint off, but left the chrome all pitted and scratched... I tried some "chome" like paint, but it's more silvery looking than chrome... I think I'll just leave em black and slowly replace with used ones as I can get em cheap (anyone have any CHEAP badges, I need all of em, Front Jeep, Side Comanches, Side 4x4, rear 4.0L, etc...) Are you talking about the standard 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol that you get at the drug store or whatever... I popped one of the side "Comanche"'s off...soaked it in this stuff that I had, and it didn't TOUCH the paint, no removal, never even a little bit... I'm thinking paint at this point... -
Here's a couple pictures of my jeep

Painted Emblems? Repaint or Replace?

It would have been better had some prep been done...It looks like they painted right over all the stickers and everything... Not too bad, no idea what the paint looked like before. There are some spots that the spray looks too heavy and smeared just tad. More of a product of poor application than anything else I'm sure. It's "flat black", so kind of dull... I might do so better prep and re-do the Rattle once I get it running again... -
I really wished I had a secret Sauce Recipe... I don't... I usually start with a Base of something in a bottle, add some Brown Sugar, Molasses, a "random" mixture of spices to taste, sometimes a little diced garlic and simmer it up.. sometimes I'm extra lazy and just use something right of of the bottle... Sorry it isn't more interesting... I use the Weber Smoker and really like it... I also have a Fan/Temp controller that keeps the Pit at whatever temp I tell it to (or within a couple degrees, so I can smoke for long periods of time without worrying about spikes and stuff... can keep the ribs right @ 225 for 6 hours and the Pork Shoulder for 16-20 hours without adding fuel or even really opening the lid. http://virtualweberbullet.com/

My new 87 has been Rattlecanned and the geniuses went right over the top of all the emblems and stickers (not sure why)...anyhow I prefer the Chrome-ish front "Jeep", side "Comanche" and "4x4" and Rear "4.0Litre", etc, especially if I'm going to keep this MJ once I get it running again. Can I clean the Spray Paint off without messing up the "chrome" surface, or would I be better off getting some Krylon Fusion or something, or just buy new (used) ones.... I have a set of the uppercase COMANCHE emblems that are in so so shape that I could use on the sides. Since I don't want to spend much $$$ on this build, I was thinking some Silver or Chrome Color Spray Paint might be the cheapest alternative, but also might look like @ss... I've ordered a replacement sticker for the back big "J e e p" (white), because I'm too lazy to tape up and spray, and it was worth the $15 or whatever it was, and I think it will look better. #2

X2 for "Before" -
Off topic, but is that stock under hood insulation? I haven't seen that on any of the MJ's I've looked at... SW2

It Won't retract... Pulled 90% of the way out and hanging there. I can't get it to pull the "excess back in"... I have the panel off, but don't see anything really wrong with the retractor, it just doesn't appear to have the coil or spring action that is supposed to pull the belt back in. SW2

Will they work in the MJ? My Drivers Side Black Seatbelt on my new 87 won't enguage and I think it's probably gone... Will XJ front belts work? If so, I can probably find one at the PnP (since all they have is XJ's) If not, does anyone have a Black Drivers Side Belt Assembly they would be willing to part with Thanks SW2

It's early here still, barely Breakfast time, but I've got a couple slabs of SpareRibs (about 9 lbs total) on and the Brats soaking up the Beery Goodness in their future Beer Jacuzzi... Yumm, I'm starving already! More pictures to follow as the "Project" progresses! Happy Memorial Day and Thanks to all of those that have served this country, past, present and future! :USAflag: :USAflag: :USAflag: SW2

I also found the Build Sheet under the Carpet in the Back Drivers Side... I have no idea what most of the stuff means, and I can pretty much tell how the truck was equipped, but maybe there is something interesting on there... Pulled all the trim and Carpet in preparation of some type of Tranny Swap and hopful to find some Bucket Seats and or Brackets... The Black Carpet was spectacular and actually was more "damp" that would have expected when I yanked it out, especially on the Passenger side... you can see some "slight" surface rust, but nothing compared to you dudes out in the Rust/Salt Belt...

2WD MJ BA10/5 -> 4WD XJ AW4/NP231/Dana30?
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Pat... the way you describe it sounds very do-able (with probably 100 ?'s on here with tons of pics through the process....) I was getting ready to take the carpet out anyhow...it isn't in great shape (maybe tonight if I get around to it)... that's something I think I can handle without asking too many silly questions... I'm guessing that replacement Black Carpet in decent shape isn't easy to come by, so this set might have to do for now with the black floor mats. It might be a couple weeks until I can get the tranny/tcase/axle, so I guess I have that much time to get the Tranny and Front Axle (well, front tube, not really an axle) taken out of mine (since I don't really know how to do either one of those, it should take about that long... :eek:
