2WD MJ BA10/5 -> 4WD XJ AW4/NP231/Dana30?
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Crap, I was afraid of that.. "Lots of work" for a guy who's never so much as dropped a tranny or T-Case or anything doesn't sound like a lot of fun... I did some searches and the descriptions and steps included quite a few words and acronyms that I don't know or understand... Maybe out of my league... Of course if I get the Tranny/T-Case/Axle for next to nothing (not 100% sure on $$$), then I guess if I have to pay to get some of the stuff done, or buy some "new" parts to complete the swap, I might still be not too bad. To be honest (and I might get hammered for it)... in my TJ, I LOVE my Auto and wouldn't drive a Manual for heavy offroading...But that's just how I roll. To each thier own I guess when it comes to Manual vs. Auto... Sw2 -
OK, I'm maybe changing again on my newly acquired 87 MJ... I have the opportunity to procure, VERY cheaply (maybe free), a AW4 Auto, NP231, and Front D30 (with 3.07's) that match my current rear MJ D35. The guy is pulling the 4.0L out of a 92or 93 XJ to install in a CJ (No idea how or why), and he basically said I could have the rest. How hard is the conversion from 5Spd (BA10/5) to an Auto (AW4), and do I have to worry since this is from a "newer" XJ with the HO 4.0L vs my non-Ho '87 MJ 4.0L. Thanks SW2

$500 Manche... Worth Looking at? *** My new $400 MJ ***

Oh the difference a day makes... Got a reply from the guy in my Club with his own personal XJ Junkyard on his property...I asked what kind of "extra" stuff he had, and mentioned that I might consider keeping this MJ whole if I could get the parts to convert to 4x4 with a new tranny/tcase/front axles, etc... this was his reply... "It sounds to me like you need to come up and look at what I've got. I think I can cover a good portion of what you need. I have more parts that I know what to do with." -
Well... as I've posted in another thread, I've picked up an 87 MJ for a possible 4.0L swap into my 89 MJ (still not 100% sure if I'm going to swap or rebuild the '87 MJ into a running possible 4x4 ride if I can find the parts, without paying an arm and a leg for a Tranny/TCase/Front Axle). Anyhow a couple quick ?'s to consider while I'm deciding what I'm going to do. My '89 has AC, the '87 doner does not. If I do a swap, can I just leave or reinstall all the AC stuff back in the '89 when the new engine goes in? The '87 is 2WD with the "dead" BA/10 and my 89 is 4WD with AX15. I assume that i'll be able to bolt my '89 AX-15 right up the 4.0L from the '87 without changing anything else, correct? Are there other differences in the 87 4.0 and 89 4.0 that I'm going to have to deal with or think about? The other option that I might consider (even though if I'm leery about a straight swap, I know I don't have the knowhow to pull this of) is to pull this 4.0L from the '87 and setup a Stroker setup to drop into my '89.

Yah, maybe... we'll have to see how long I can sit on it before the wife gets P.O'ed about it taking up a garage spot (her's by the way)... I did email one of my 4x4Club guys that is known to have a good chunk of XJ parts/pieces/and dead soldiers on his property to see what he might have or be willing to part with. There are a couple small rough spots on this one, and I REALLY wished they hadn't rattlecanned the thing (they did a half-@ssed job), so that alone will make it a little more challenging to restore, since I don't have a clue how to do ANY body work or painting (unless I wanted to do another half-@ssed job over the top of the one that's there now.) -

Thanks for checking all of this... nearly $2K for an engine of unknown condition, shipped 1/2 way across the US is probably not a great investment... -

I don't know that he wanted to go down to $400 too bad, but I figured I went to the trouble of borrowing a trailer and driving up over the hill to take a look, I should at least come home with something...I think he would have flat out said no had I offered $300... The Alternator, Starter, and Radiator are all barely 6 months new (with receipts) and he gave me another basically new Radiator (1 year old, upgraded his XJ Radiator and it was just collecting dust in his garage and he was selling his house). After pulling it into the garage, the Springs on the Seat are a little bum-pokey, so it's not quite as nice as it looks on the surface. The Black Carpet is worn in a few spots, but it has decent black carpet mats. Black mini-console looks good, if I toss on a new shift boot (that I have). Which Burrito shop is that? In SC, I like Planet Fresh downtown and Taco's Moreno's over on Water St. There is a Taqueria here in Scotts Valley that's pretty good too! -
WOW, How much MJ is actually left?

I guess I should change the title to my new $400 Manche... Body actually looks pretty solid...a couple small spots, and it's been rattlecanned (I think they went right over the Stickers, but it was originally black)... the Tranny actually rolls and we were able to drive it up the ramps of the trailer and I plan on being able to take it into the Garage (the trans growls pretty good and no REV at all). The Black interior is OK, not perfect... the Bench Surface is GOOD, but a couple tears on the drivers side. the Engine sounds and looks pretty good... the Alternator/Starter are basically brand new, newer exhaust, etc. The Bed is pretty nice except for a couple screw holes where it had a Tool Box. 2WD of course, D35 in the Back... Headliner shot (he gave me the panel and material)... Will get more Pics after I get it in the garage and cleaned up and decide what I'm going to do with it. I'm still leaning Engine Swap, Part out and then Scrap the rest... -

Probably more than it would cost to build your own. Oh, and you'd have to talk the guy into/pay him to pull the motor and sell the truck without a motor. I was hoping to get one of you guys to do it! -

I don't think a brush, but maybe an undercoat spray...wasn't paying too much attention... I guess I just need to crawl under in the daytime and take a look to see if anything looks "weird"...

Shifting and driving didn't feel any different... It was only 2 miles, with a top end of 35 mph thru town though...

They have to hosted somewhere... and then once they are up somewhere you use the IMG tag arround the URL of .JPG file... I use a proggy called "Shup" that allows you to direct uploaded (Right click on the file and Shup shows up as an option) to a few different Pic hosting sites (I use Imageshack thru Shup) http://shup.com/

...at least I'm consistent in asking dumb questions.... Is there anything special about a Car Wash (Drive thru Gas Station Kind of thing) that would cause my Tranny/Tcase to get really warm, right afterward... as in feeling the heat thru the floor in the "hump" between the seats... I drove it home pretty much right afterward and parked it, but had to run back to work, so didn't crawl under to look at stuff, and took the TJ back to work. It's dark now, and cooled down I'm sure.... Washed 20 years of "dirt" insulation off maybe? Wade

Just called the guy and he still hasn't sold it, so I'm going to go look at this MJ tomorrow... I think I can offer the guy less than $500 for a non-op MJ... He's had it for sale for a while now with no other leads or people even calling about it, so I think if he wants it gone he may go $300-$400, but if it looks like there aren't enough parts for me to use/resell to you guys and the body isn't that special then I might just skip it... It's only gonna cost me $30 in Gas to get up there and back (maybe a little more towing the Flatbed trailer with an MJ on it on the way home). I'm still not sure about an engine swap...I guess I will see how this engine runs and sounds compared to mine (which is pretty bad)... Will update tomorrow, with pics if I get it... Wade *** EDIT *** I was Google Mapping the directions and with the Google Street View, you can actually see the MJ in the dudes Driveway... No Idea how old that pic is, but probably not more than a few months or so... http://tinyurl.com/5qnxdl Gotta Love GOOGLE! -

Sounds too good.... http://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/car/690803886.html i have a 1990 jeep comanche with a 4.5 inch lift kit, 4.7 liter stroker motor with about 10000 miles on it, roll bar, toolbox, cap, custom bumpers. body is beat up. the rear end and transmission went out in it and i havent had the money to fix it. i have a second set of axles for it (dana 30 front, 35 rear) and i have a ford 9 inch. i got a used tranny at a junk yard but it needs a mating transfercase. i have a spare stock 4.0 motor with about 170000 miles on it, ran good when i pulled it. i also have alot of spare motor and drivetrain parts. 1200 or best offer for everything, i made be interested in trades but i like cash. my number is 269-492-8377 if you have any questions.

Separate "MJ Tech" and "Non-MJ Tech" For
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in Forum Issues, Ideas, Testing
You have an MJ? Had one now have it's cousin which is the same tech questions as an mj. But you get someone with oh I don't know a F250 then that is for maybe another site for a tech question. Or just ask your question in the tech section. But Fords shouldn't get their own area on a MJ site. You dig what I'm saying? Yup, sure do.. and I wasn't suggesting a specific forum for every and every type like other big sites have... just one for everything non-MJ specific... but as Pete said, the demand is probably not there on this site with this audience and I'm cool with that...
