Going Rate for Engine/Tranny
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The seller is a reputable friend of a friend (he actually does all the really hard off-road recovery's at local State OHV park), so I believe that he is straight about 1K rebuild time. The rig wasn't his, but someone that owed him $$$. How about a best and worst case.... Best Case - Rebuild done by reputable shop, with all paperwork and documentation, and looks/sounds/runs well = ?$ Worst Case - I hear it run, sounds good, no obvious damage but no documentation =?$ -
Going Rate for Engine/Tranny
SuperWade2 replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don't know about paperwork yet... It was a newly re-built rig that was rolled I guess, hoping to see/hear it run tomorrow. Wade -
What's the "going rate" for a rebuilt (1,000mile) HO Engine/Tranny? Going to go look at this with a guy from my club that wants to use the lift/rims/tires and 4:1 for his XJ but isn't using the Engine/Tranny... He want's to know what I want to pay for the Engine/Tranny. Hopefully will get to hear it run tomorrow. Here was the post. 1991 Jeep Cherokee long arm kit, Chromoly axles, Rebuilt motor and tranny This is out of a 1991 Jeep Cherokee that I am parting out (rolled bad). 4.0L Rebuilt 1k miles agoe/ Auto Trans Rebuilt 1k miles ago/ 4.1 T-case, long arm kit, ss brake lines. skid plate, Chromoly axles front and rear, new drive shafts, Throttle body spacer. This Jeep Runs great and is complete so if you want to here it run you can. $xxxx with new rims and tires(they still have the nipples on them) 315/70/17 pro comp. will Part out for the right price just call me and let me know what you need.

Yes... yanked it out when I had all the leaks, scrubbed it myself, took to to the car wash down the street and they scrubbed and it turned out pretty well...not perfect, but pretty clean for 20+ year old rug...

Well, I"m still on the lookout for a new motor for my MJ... I have a friend of a friend selling a rolled XJ with a bunch of stuff on it... I'm considering getting for the engine if I can convince another friend with an XJ to get the Lift and Axles and other stuff... If not I'd hope I could sell enough stuff off it to recoop some of the $$$ I know converting from my 89 Renix to the 91 HO might be a bit more work, but if I have the entire Rig, I should have the stuff I need hopefully. OK, I'm a little slow when it comes to this stuff... (nobody would argue) There are two line split off this same thing...one that goes up into the pressure bottle and the other that's going into the Firewall... Are you guys saying just chop off the one going to the firewall, and extend that hose? And what about the Sensor that's hanging off the back there?

The plastic on this thing seems to have melted pretty good and coolant basically just pouring out. What is it, and where can I get a replacement? Changing to an open system is basically off the table right now, I just need to keep it running for now and don't really want to dump ANY $$$ into it if I don't HAVE too...I'd probably still sell it and get something I could trust for a daily driver if I thought it was worth anything. You gettin' one FS87? I'm not sure I want to spend $200 ... the rest of my engine is so tired that I don't want to sink too much money into it until it blows up. I guess I could likely move new headers over if I did a rebuild or a swap with another Renix eventually. I drove the MJ to work today and remember why I hadn't in a while... I just runs SOOOO poorly (and the sound...OMG it's bad)... If I wasn't loading up the TJ for a Wheeling Trip to Swamp Lake this weekend, the MJ would probably still be sitting on the street being sad.

I'm kind of dumb but what does "headers" replace, the exhaust manifold and then ???

Looks like only 3 options for the RENIX $102 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-89-Jeep-Cherokee-4-0-Tubular-Exhaust-Manifold-4-0L-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem35aca521f1QQitemZ230529769969QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2249wt_1165 or $115 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-89-Jeep-Cherokee-4-0-Tubular-Exhaust-Manifold-4-0L-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem483cd14f7bQQitemZ310257995643QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1554wt_1165 or $130 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEEP-CHEROKEE-COMANCHE-4-0-87-90-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-NEW-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5195776554QQitemZ350399980884QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1702wt_1165

I never really got a good answer to my question about "Which new replacement manifold should I buy?" The MJ hasn't moved in weeks...partially because I don't like the looks I get when people hear it "chugging" down the road and partially cause I've been driving the TJ topless since the weather has been nice. Now that Winter is approaching, I'd like to get this replaced so I can put the miles on the MJ instead... Thanks Wade

I was quoted 4 hours of labor at one of my local shops... I don't even know what he's charging now a days, but I'm guessing $90-$100/hr. Might be better off trying to get some wrenching help from guys from my club to help.

Wheel adapters/spacers???
SuperWade2 replied to Jasonapsmith's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Should... I'm running Spidertrax in the back on mine with 31x10.5 and OEM Gamblers that have a deep 5.5"Backspacing! -
Any suggestions for buying a new one... I don't know exactly knew where or how bad mine is cracked/broken, but I'm 99.99% sure that it is (I had a bad one in my TJ and it's the same symptoms), and has been for a while, and likely quite severely. 4.0L Manifolds on Ebay are about $100-$115 (not sure of differences), RockAuto wants closer to $200... How hard of a job is replacing it? Require welding (I don't have a welder)... should I pay a shop a couple hours of labor to do it? Thanks Wade

Thanks Bud, like your Rubi also...lots of similar mods. Not a bit of heat problems (we don't get much 100 degree heat though)... Last fall I replaced the Thermo and flushed and kept right at ~200 all the time, I blew my 11 Year Old OEM Radiator (the upper seal where the metal meets the plastic) in February wheeling in the snow (go figure). I replaced with a cheapy Chinese Single Core all Aluminum... it's not a long term solution, but was cheaper than an OEM replacement and I didn't have the $$$ for a "good" one. So far it's been fine, and I still keep right at 200ish.

Another TJ...I'd be lying if the I'd didn't say that my MJ is actually the "OTHER" Jeep and the TJ gets the majority of my "affection" and by "affection", I mean $$$. Sitting at just over 43,000 miles at 11.5 years old, so I suspect this thing should last me a good while... 4.0L, 3Spd Auto, NP231, D30/D44 Just got it all cleaned up today, we are going to be in our little town parade on Sunday... We bought it new in 1999, drove it stock for a few years, traded MY Grand Prix in and I took over the TJ and started doing some small mods...it's grown some since then...
