Well, I went and picked up the brakeware master last night. It looks a whole lot like what was on there, same ruber boot, same finish. I bench bled it, put it on the truck, then hooked up y electric vacuum pump to the bleeder. I bled it for about 2 minutes, ~20 oz of fluid. Got in the truck, the clutch is totally different! Now the clutch engages/disengages far from the floor. So apparently I bought a truck with a bad master, but since I'd never driven a jeep with a 5sp I figured the long travel was normal. A lot of the things I've been blaming on the syncros in the tranny are gone. Shifting into gears is a whole lot smoother, I doubt the clutch was disenagaging completely. Even my idle has gone up to a normal 600 RPM and is smoother now. THe bad news is that since I'm used to the clutch taking up so low I've been over reving the engine and taking off like an @$$. SO now I have to learn to drive the ruck smooth again. We'll see how long the Brakeware master holds up. If I get a year out of it I'll be impressed. When I do the tranny work I'll put a new slave cylinder in, a quality one from napa or the dealer. SO I'l have a whole new hydraulic clutch system then.

first off, the yj is NASTY! That looks like some huge power under there. Second, I can see the electronic controls of the AW4 being a problm, since it uses the TPS and a myrid of other things fed to the TCU to shift it. If you want to go V8 I think SBC and a 700 tranny would probably be the easiest. Tranny is self contained as far as control, and you could go carbed 350 or injected.
-
yeah, I plan on making it to the powwow nex year. THis year the tranny/wheelbearings are shot. Looking to rebuild/replace my AX-15, need wheel bearings, and the freakin clutch has been killing me for two weeks. She'll be solid for the summer, I just don't know if I'll get it lifted, but I'm making the powwow next sumer.

man, I've got nothing on tow ratings for the comanche after a few minutes with google. Does anyone have an owners manual with that in there? I'd be curious myself. I bet Eagle has it somewhere, he's like the MJ museum :)

abundance of MJ's, how many do you see a day?

i don't see too man in this area. The guy at the parts store has an 86 with the 2.5-rusted bed. Theres one in my old hometown 20 miles north, totally rusted out, should be a trail only rig, and I wouldn't even feel safe with that. There's a white 4 banger in the yard I'm gonna go strip of lights, and anything useful, might get my axles with 4.10s in it. There's a blue one that the guy running the yard owns. I HEARD of one for sale on the other side of town, never saw it. I think that's it. Up until I bought this one I had only ever seen two. -
would 4.10s be too deep for 31s on the highway? I don't commute far, and it probably won't be the highway trip car, we gots a camry for that. I might like 4.10s too much to keep tires on it.
-
I second the stroker opinion. When the renix needs rebuilt, it will become a 4.6L. Let's just hope that's sometime in the FAR future.
-
that's what I figured. I found a new one at autozone for $50. Brakeware crap. I'd love to put a bendix one back in it, but I just don't have $120 to throw at the clutch right now. So, it's $50 autocrap one, use it till it dies, then put an oem master/slave cylinder combo in it.

sounds like I'll just grab the whole 3.73 axles then. I was looking at the 3.55's just because I thought that was the break for my axles. The guy I have does his own gears for dirt track race cars, so I would trust him to know his way around an axle. He's got a lift and such, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal for him to get under there ad swap them out. I may just see if that 4-banger comanche in the yard has decent axles. It has a manual tranny though, so I don't know what ratio those would be. I don't know if it's the 4 or 5 speed. So I'll find that out this saturday when Igo over there. it's a total bummer my master cylinder died. That money was gonna go towards other much needed parts.

if I do it, I'll do the dakota/s10 leaf pack rebuild. My leafs are pretty much shot I think. I'll just mix and match till I get the height I want. I might shoot for 3" and then put 3" coils up front. Do you think I'll run into any driveline problems with a 3"?

So, today was the first day I had frost on the windshield. It seems my master cylinder doesn't like the cold. Come to think of it, the last time it was dry it was cold. I replaced the clutch hose, because it was nasty and split. I thought that was the end of my clutch problem, until this morning, and I have air in the master cylinder. I have the telltale brake fluid on my fuse block too. A Few Questions: 1. how hard is it to rebuild? I've got all weekend, so time isn't that big of a deal. 2. Best way to remove the master cylinder from the firewall? I know it's just bolts and such, I'm more interested in the linkage, I see that it's got a bushing, best way to take that out without destroying it. 3. I've had an AX-15 swapped in, the clutch seems to work just fine, (when the master cylinder isn't leaking), are there different master cylinders for different trannies? Should I track down and AX-15 specific one? 4. If I don't rebuild it, junkyard or reman or new? I'm on a tight budget here, the Jeeps already soaked up most of my disposable income in other parts. Thanks fellas

just a wuick question, are 3.73s the biggest I can go without changing the carrier? Forgive me if I'm all screwed up, but differentials are scary. I got a guy that does race car axles, he's never worked on a jeep, but he'd do the gears for like $75 an axle. Fair price? I'd just as soon go get the axles out of a yard and pay $150 for the swap. Better than me eating up a ring and pinion because of my newbness.
-
yeah, I'll look for one of those. 3.73s are the gears I really want. I think that would get me into the sweet spot with 31s.
-
So, I've got the AX-15 with 31x10.5 tires that came with the truck. %th gear is totally useless unless I'm on the freeway doing 70. Even then I have to downshift to go up a hill. I was thinking about finding a set of automatic axles and yanking the gears. They should be 3.55s which would be a good improvement over my current 3.07s. The question is, how hard is this? I've never done any kind of diff or axle work. I have all your basic hand tools, pullers and ratchets. No air tools. Would it be easier to just grab the whole axles and swap them? That way I'd have spare shafts and such for when the d35/30 broke. I'm just looking for some guidance here, venturing into regearing axles is a whole new world for me.
-
well, I'm probably going to BB it, since the passenger side leaf spring has a bit of a sag in it. So I might as well just go up 2" if I have to replace the leaf pack.
-
Yes, thanks. Now I can measure my hub to fender and see.
-
I can't find any kind of weight info on the net. Does anyone know how much a 242 weighs? It can't be light, I mean, just look at it, she's a pig :)
-
yeah, they fit, but I've been looking at pictures and mine seems to sit higher than xjs I've seen on stock suspension and 31s. I counted the leaf pack. It's got 4 regular leaves, and then another that is shaped funny I assume thats the overload spring. I suppose it just sits a whole lot higher than a cherokee, and since I've not found any pics with 31s and a stock suspension on an mj I just though it was big.

looking for anyone with webpage designing experience
87manche replied to Pete M's topic in Forum Issues, Ideas, Testing
PHP generates the HTMl on the fly based on a database that you set up. So if you want to add a new page you just go into the web interface, create a new page based on the templates loaded in the database and put in your content. Most of the blogs you see are PHP based, because they're real easy to update with new content. Depending on how the database is setup you can do just about anything with it, picture galleries, front page comments, anything really. This particular forum is PHP actually. That's why I mentioned it, since you already have PHP running, then it's already setup on your server., and you could just load PHPnuke in or soething. It shouldn't be that hard to implement. http://phpnuke.org/modules.php?name=FAQ ... ategories= there's the FAQ. Once the backend was setup you would just use the front end to enter your news updates and such on the front page, or just use your member userid and pass to upload pictures to the gallery for instance. I think you've got my gmail in my user settings sned me an email, I'll give you a call, we can chat on the phone. -
yeah, my wagon was in pickup mode for a while. That rear seat folds down super flat without the bench in it.
-
SO who has stock ride height info? I'm looking for hub to fender measurements. I bought the truck with 31s and I think it may have an AAL. How many leaves are in the stock pack? Still trying to learn about the mj.
-
unfortunately she's my DD, so I find things wrong all the time. The clutch is fixed now, so on the list of must do items i rebuild/replace the AX-15, and do the front wheel hubs.
-
yeah I'm not sure. Since it is my DD for at least some time to come I don't want to lift it super high. I'd like to avoid the DW and keep the road manners nice. It's really going to be for some part time wheelin. Future plans are to make it a trail rig, money permitting. Right now I'm just trying to make her mechanicallt sound, if there is such a thing for a Jeep:) Everytimt I fix something I find something new that's broken.
