  2. i found a white 91 XJ at the jy with color matched bumper and power side mirrors. Unfortunately the bumper was trashed or i would have grabbed it. Hasn't been much at the yards lately, so i picked this ebay: Plan to paint it red to match the rest of the truck. The end caps seem to be a made of something slightly different than the normal end caps. Maybe its just the result of the paint.
  3. A few people have linked Sherman's site. No firsthand experience with their floor pans, but it's probably where i'm going to end up getting my replacements. I'm a little concerned that they list their full length floor pan for the cherokee/wagoneer/comanche; i though that the cherokee floorboard was not the same as ours.
  4. Thanks for the help, i'll give it a try tomorrow after work. I've spent a fair amount of time lately under the truck; and its looked ok. But i'll trust the tape measure a whole lot more. I know the frame dimensions have been posted around here at some point, i'm sure it will turn up with a search. Just more info to take with me to the garage tomorrow. Thanks again.
  5. the bumper definitely sits slightly farther back on the drivers side...which is a bad thing since that's the new bumper. The old bumper had a small dent, but not enough to even bend up the mounting brackets. If i work at it before tightening down the bolts, i can even that out. It isn't as bad as that one picture makes it out to be because i didn't have the headlight bezel screwed down...but i'm still wondering if there's some frame damage. It wasn't until after i tore into the truck that i found other damage the PO didn't disclose before the sale.
  6. a couple of pics: driver's side passenger's side fender bolts
  7. do you mean 97+, the updated front ends? Definitely not a newer one, the fender came from an older xj (the flare extends down to the bottom plastic valence). The one thing i noticed about the fender is that i need to drill two new holes for the headlight bezel screws. The fender has holes, but the top one is too high and the bottom one too low.
  8. i was test fitting some "new" parts this morning and couldn't get the bumper caps flush against the front fenders. About 2/3" on the drivers side and 1/3" on the passengers side. I also picked up a fender and and flare from the JY that had no damage. When i put it on my MJ, a couple of the bolt holes didn't align very well/at all. The best i could do was get all but one bolt on (the second one in from the front of the engine bay). Am i missing something simple, or is this an indication of a larger problem?
  9. Is that the place down hwy 3 with all the (overpriced) jeeps? When i asked the previous owner when could go see got an email back three days later that it was sold. And it turns out some shop buys it up, throws some moab rims on it and more than doubles the price...nice. EDIT...yea its at the place i'm thinking of.
  10. When i visit my parents, i always spend at least one morning down there. $16 sounded about right for the front turn signals with the 25% off coupon. Right around Christmas, there was a MJ in great shape, clean bed with roll bar. When i went back three weeks later, it was gone; someone bought the back end, cut it off from the cab and hauled it away. Too bad the one that's there isn't in such good shape. If you haven't already, don't waste your time in the JY next door. They don't bother making rows making it tough to get to what little there was in there. btw, nice looking MJ; like the color scheme. A 4x4 are tough enough to find down there, especially for the price you got it for.
  11. from the u pull n pay on Benoist Farms Rd?
  12. Craftsman Tool Set The day before Christmas my dad and I went down to the u-pull-it and found a couple of things for the MJ: Power Mirrors and wiring Pigtails XJ overhead Console with Pigtail
  13. thanks for the suggestion; making a list of what look for when one of us goes back. Owner has already agreed to drop the price some to offset any repair. Pretty optimistic at this point something will get done.
  14. defiantly not complaining; just double checking with those who have more experience with MJs. After searching thru threads for floor pan and floor rust, i haven't yet found a picture that showed rust repair that far back in the cab floor. Didn't know if there was a reason for it or it. As long as its not structural, i'm too concerned.
  15. yea, i think i'm going to be waiting on the owner to pick up the right torx bit and take everything apart. The area of rust was soft, had lots of give; basically it seems to be rusted almost thru in that 4"x3" area. At what point is it better to cut and replace then use a rust converter? The truck is in good condition otherwise; it would make a great DD if it wasn't for that one spot.
  16. No, not much of it. They pulled some of the trim off and pulled the carpet back to the seats on both sides and found only some minor surface rust. The owner was going to take some more pics and send them to me so i could post them here. He said something about needing a torx bit. Doing a search now for seat removal. The passenger side door has some damage and its probably where the water is getting in.
  17. A friend went and viewed an MJ this morning. Everything looked pretty good except for this. The pics are of the looking backwards at underside of the truck, near the passenger door. My guess is that its the drain hole furthest back in the cab. Didn't have tools around to take apart enough of the interior to see the entire floor pan (live and learn i guess). What we could see had only minor surface in a few areas. Aside very small spot here and there, the rest of the underside of the truck is in really good shape.
  18. I don't know if this is the same listing...but it is a dealership offering a 2007 comanche on autotrader. The best part of the ad is this toward the middle: "Disclaimer Easy to get to from Dade or Broward. Come visit us at our new store! Not responsible for typographical errors. "
  19. I'm in the same boat you are, so i can sympathize. i know its at least a 4 hour drive, but there is an MJ in Detroit you might be interested in. 91 4.0L auto: http://detroit.craigslist.org/car/476747673.html listed on the 12th
  20. I second this...nice, clean install.
  21. Nice looking MJ 86-89 MJ Vin Code Identification (its a 4kb .rtf file that will open in wordpad)
  22. Kind of getting off topic, but that's ok...i'm surprised the info in a carfax report would be different if you get it thru a dealership. The MJs i've seen listed by dealerships are way more than i'm willing to pay, so it looks like a private party sale is my best bet. And from what i've read so far in this post, that would make a carfax report pretty useless.
  23. I've been using a site called craig's little helper to search craig's lists in eastern texas, from Southern NJ to DC (where i used to work and live) and south Florida (where my parents are). In the past two months i've pretty much struck out . I probably need to be a little more patient since i'm being picky about year, engine and transmission. A couple of other things i do is oodle.com and autotrader.com. The asking prices there are nearly as bad or even sometimes worse than what people look for on ebay.
  24. I was kind of suspicious about carfax and how it can only have 4 records. My two year old KJ has more.... Mitch, i appreciate the input. What drives down the value the most, the miles or the damaged body panels? One of the projects i would like to do on any MJ i find is to add power windows and /door locks. If i understand correctly, the easiest way to do that is to find a complete door from a donor XJ. So i'm not as concerned about the damaged door as i am about the damage to the bed side.
  25. I have the chance to pick up a '91 eliminator. Red 5sp 4.0 HO, 4x2, 200,xxx miles (current owner put 70k of those on and has kept it garaged). I would be the third owner. Except for the mileage, its basically what i've been looking for and he only wants $800, KBB says its worth around $1000 or so. The problems...There is some drivers side damage from clipping the edge of a traffic barrier (pics below). Half dollar sized area of paint bubble on the bottom of the rear right quarter panel, but otherwise the owner claims the truck is free of rust. It needs a new muffler, which the owner has but hasn't installed. Because of work, i won't be back in the area until at least December; so i'd have to have a friend who is a fair shadetree mechanic look at it for me. If my work situation becomes permanent, i may need to have the truck shipped; another $700. front interior damaged side So is this one worth the trouble and expense? Also, on an 16 year old vehicle is it worth getting a carfax or autocheck history report? (i've entered the VIN on their sites, carfax reports 4 records, autocheck 10). Thanks in advance
