Rear end ratio

Recommended Posts

Can I tell my rear end ratio in my D35 without counting the gear teeth? I think my ratio is 3.07, but I am not sure.

Can I change ratios in the ring and pinion gears and not change anything else???

My pinion gear is shredded and so is the bearing on the drivers side of the ring gear. Can it be determined which caused which to shred?? I think I lost teeth of the pinion gear which got lodged under the ring gear causing that not to turn and shreded the bearing next to it. What could have caused this??? Mileage- 131K??? Oil looked OK maybe a little think...??? Drive shaft (should still be near stock angle)???

6-cyl 5-speed. It's 3.07

There are two different ring gear thicknesses, depending on ratio, so changing the ratio might require a new carrier as well as new gears. To further complicate your issue, the carrier break isn't between the same two ratios for the front as it is for the rear. I went from 3.07 to 3.73. I know I put in a new rear carrier but I went to a TrueTrac so that was going to happen anyway. I'm sorry, but I don't remember now if I had to change the front carrier or not.

The rear is 3.55 and up where as the front break is 3.73 and higher.

That sounds more correct. I know they aren't the same on both ends.

So, back to the original question: what this says is, if you want to go to 3.54s you need to replace the rear carrier, if you want to go to 3.73s or 4.10s you need to replace both carriers.

I would hesitate rebuilding a toasted Dana 35. After my 35 started spitting teeth, it was discovered that the axle was tweaked. No idea if one problem caused the other or if they were independant. Personally I'd search out 3.55 geared XJ axles. Oh wait, I did! :D

D35 are famous for bending tubes :brows: I bent 2 axles before I realized I wanted an 8.8 :D

BTW carriers are cheap. I thin you can get them for the d30 for like 26 bucks, for the d35 just find some one who has grenaded it.. then you will be all right
