comancheman Posted June 11, 2008 Share Posted June 11, 2008 i picked up a new fan clutch at Advanced today but I'm not sure if its the right one. all the holes line up right but the old clutch feels tighter than the new one. is this normal? the truck was cold when i removed it the truck has been running a little warm and this is the only part of the cooling system that isnt new so i figured id give it a shot Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I just did mine and while their is a little more resistance on the new one when it gets hot .It isn't much differnt than the old one I pulled out. If at idle it would do OK. If the clutch is tighter are you talking about how it spins? It should be loose unless it is hot. When you spin it cold it should spin about 5 times before it stops as a general rule. Now after replacing mine, it runs right at 190-195 all the time even in 100 degree heat w/ A/C on. comancheman Posted June 12, 2008 Author Share Posted June 12, 2008 no it wasnt squealing. it was a few months ago and i replaced the idler. all better now. i put in the new fan clutch today and now it still climbs way up to just before the redline then drops to 210* then evens out around 220*. any ideas on why it gets so hot before it drops down. my first guess would be the thermostat but about 6 months ago i put in a new stant 195* and i bought the good one. I'm thinkin about goin to a 180* thermostat but would really like it to run properly on OE equivalent parts. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

comancheman Posted June 12, 2008 Author Share Posted June 12, 2008 well my truck kept getting hot especially up hills. it used to always run at 210 but not lately. i replaced the fan clutch because it was all that was left. all within the past year ive replaced the radiator, waterpump, thermostat, all hoses, flushed everything twice and it got a new temp sender when i went to the full cluster. i have the auxillary fan running through a relay to a switch on the dash Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just a pain if you have fat hands. 1)Take of the fan shroud. 2)Take off four bolts holding the fan clutch on. 3)Once the fan clutch is off remove the four bolts holding the fan to the old clutch and bolt it to the new one. 4)Now put everything back on in reverse. The only two problems I ran in to were that the four first bolts were stuck on to the pulley (PB plasted, problem fixed) and the second one was that the old clutch was hard to take off the pulley (used a bar and hammer to slowly loosen it by tapping the crease in between the two and rotating. comancheman Posted June 14, 2008 Author Share Posted June 14, 2008 I'm pleased now. i put in the new clutch, flushed the sytem and bled the air out. now she runs at 210 almost all the time and goes up to 220 while I'm climbin hills. it still heats up to almost redline before the thermostat opens but its better than it was. I took the bolts holding the fan clutch off by turning around with my rearend to the truck and taking them off without looking at the truck. It was alot easier to get my hand in that way.
