Hi all, I recently bought an '87 MJ, and I was wondering if anyone could clue me in on the color coding on the radio wiring, specifically the color of the constant 12v, switched 12v, ground and dimmer. The person I bought it from installed an aftermarket head unit, and did a real hack job on the wiring, so I want to splice the various wires from the new head into the factory harness.

Thanks for the help!

Ya could always do what I did, red and yellow are usually power and black is almost always ground, after that I just switched the fade and balance on the head unit and tried different wires till I got the correct speaker working. I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but it worked for me.

Thanks BeaterJeep! I think maybe I wasn't clear enough, the head unit powers the speakers (and amp) no problem, so I know the speaker wires are hooked up OK. The problem is, the head will cut out (The display goes out and no sound is produced) but the head is still getting some power as the amp remains powered (I verified this by pulling the harness from the head, and I could here the sub "pop" from the amp powering down). It also stays powered when the ignition is switched off, although it dosen't do this when the head is fuctioning normally.

After pulling the head, I noticed the wire splices are just wrapped with electrical tape, and one connection is two wires from the head (Switched 12v and dimmer, I believe) spliced in to a single wire in the dash, and this connection has some exposed wire, which is where I think the proble is originating from.

I'm just trying to figure out what went where from the factory so I can make sure that the connections are where they're supposed to be before I finalize all the connections.

Thanks again for the help!

I wish I could help but my wiring manual is for 1988, and I'm 95% certain they did the radios very differently in 87 than in 88.

i installed a sony xplod in both my 86 and 88 and the wiring was the same. but if eagle still thinks they are not then i can tell you the color combos from my 86 when i rip the dash apart on weds to grease up my speedo.

I've been wrong before, and will probably be wrong at least one more time before I die. I know the 88 has a single hydra connector that snaps into the back of the radio. My recollection is that up through 87 the radios used two or three plugs to get everything connected. If the color coding is the same, though, I can look up the colors in the 88 electrical manual.

I've got a blog bookmarked on my home PC that has all the wiring info for all the years. It was spot on for my 87 stereo install. I'll post up the link later if I can't find it on google.

I rememer that te bog was dothedew247 and it was at blogspot.com
