frankthetank07
Hey everyone. I'm new to the site so first off hello. I have an 86 Jeep Comanche with the 2.8L and 287,XXX miles, a 5speed tranny, and 4X4. I was looking around to rebuild it and came across the 2.8 to 3.1 stroker kit by ARI and I was wondering if anyone knew how if it was worth the price, I have the link below. I don't plan on any tires bigger than 32 or 33s and I need it to drive back to college by the end of august. Some of the hills are a big struggle for the truck right now and I can only make it in 3rd gear on most of the climbs. Costs and Gas Mileage are my biggest concern and any help would be great. http://www.engine-parts.com/GMV6/gmv6ps1.html Thanks, frankthetank07
Pete M
Welcome to the club! Please don't rebuild a chevy 2.8L that came in a Jeep. There are more issues with it than meager displacement (tiny oil passages come to mind). A better choice would be to find a 3.1 or 3.4L from an early 90s Camaro of Firebird. Those engines are infinitely superior to the older blocks.

If your truck is in good shape and you have more money than time, you can still buy a complete 3.4L crate motor from Generous Motors and just drop it in. But you should be able to find a viable 3.4L in a junkyard.
JOMJ87
For 1400 you cna surely find and rebuild a 3.4L or get a crate one. They are all over most JYs i have been to. Goodluck and use the 2.8 as an anchor if it even is good for that. Cole
JeepcoMJ
fact: you'd be better off installing a 4 cylinder 2.5 litre than you would rebuilding the 2.8 fiction: the 2.8 can be built to be better :D :brows: I dumped my 2.8 for a buick 3800. not a swap you'd be interested in pretty much since it requires alot of fabrication. it's a very similar motor to the 3.4 however...the 3.4 camaro/firebird motor is your next viable option. best bet since you're on a timeline, buy a 3.4 longblock (crate longblock with heads), and buy an edelbrock 4 bble intake and holley 390cfm carbeurator. you'll need a electric fuel pump but one from a 2.5 liter comanche would suffice...you might have to buy a pressure adjuster for it then since carb'd motors only run like 7 PSI of fuel. here's the intake you want. second one down in the list (if this link doesn't work, type in "gm 2.8 4bbl intake" in google, it's the second link second picture. http://www.ajgeneral.com/edelbrock_sbc_manifolds/ here's a few links on the swap from 2.8 to 3.4. keep in mind that at least half of your problem is the factory carbeurator...so don't even consider using the factory carb like one of these links does http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Pro ... ect_XJ.htm http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/article/a ... ?id=277008 http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... n%26sa%3DN the best thing you could do is get all the parts out of a camaro and put them in your comanche, running the camaro engine bay wiring (trim out all the camaro extra wiring) piggyback to the jeep wiring, and using the MPFI from the camaro (or firebird). this would net the best performance...but you can get good performance from the 390cfm 4bbl carb as well. -Pat
frankthetank07
Alright thanks for the advice, I actually just found a 4.2 with carb and other parts so I think I'm going to try to swap out the 2.8 for the 4.2L. The engine I'm getting is free so hopefully it isn't a painful experience.

There are still a few AQMD districts in Ca. that do not have smog checks but I don't know if Crescent City is in one of the good ones. Being so close to Humbolt I'd be worried that the greenies there would find out, (they lurk these forums you know) and kidnap you and your MJ. They'd force you to eat tofu and pour veggie diesel in your tank.
frankthetank07
The only time we have to smog our vehicles in Crescent City is when its being sold. There isnt any yearly smog testing, which is nice. I don't care about any smog issues, the truck won't pass smog how it is right now and its in my dads name so I'm still ok since hes going to keep it in his name for me. There are lots of "pointy heads" out here who have made it almost impossible to ride motorcycles, 4x4 anywhere without getting in trouble. My dad is a land surveyor and he said that about 80% of the land he is government land; Federal and State parks for the damn trees. I say log them.
