CrankShaftKid
Looking into a gear change for my 2wd 88 with a D44. This is something i won't be able to do so ill have to take it somewhere. Obviously I need the ring and pinion but what other parts are necessary and from what supplier? I also need to settle on how tall they should be. My plans don't include any tires over 33's and i will be running 31's for a pretty good while. I have a 5 speed now but it'll be an automatic by the summer. MPG is a concern for me because I commute an hour to college fairly often. Any suggestions? I was thinkin 4.10's..... Any help is appreciated. Sorry if this is the wrong section, i wasnt even thinking. -Greg
mvusse
Whatever shop will do it for you should be able to tell you what all you need. I know Summit Racing sells ring/pinion gear sets as a kit with all bearings and shims included. Even included a tube of marking paint to check the gear pattern. We went that route to repair the rear end in my buddy's YJ Wrangler a few years back. I think it had Dana 24s.
Geonovast
The only other thing you might need is a new carrier. There were two sizes used, one for 3.07, 3.55, and 3.73, and the larger one for 4.10 and 4.56. (I believe the cutoff was 4.10.)
CrankShaftKid
Anyone have a ballpark as far as a typical quote?
Oizarod115
Anyone have a ballpark as far as a typical quote? you're looking at a 300ish dollars in parts, and a few hours in labor... easily run you 5-600.
Eagle
You will need new carrier and pinion bearings, a new pinion seal, and while it's apart you should replace the axle bearings and seals on both sides. 4.10 is a good ratio if you won't go beyond 31" tires, but it's not enough gear for 33s. I put 3.73s into my red '88 MJ ... because I already had them. I had chosen that ratio because I thought it was the ideal for the XJ running stock tires or maybe 30x9.50s. When I got the MJ, I used what I had. The overall final drive ratio with 31x10.50s and 3.73 gears worked out to exactly the same as stock tires and 3.55 gears. So going to 4.10s with 31" tires is only a very small increment. 4.10s and 31s is a good compromise setup for street use and mild trail use. The crawl ratio isn't as low as I'd like, but it's quite livable. Move up to 33" tires, and you're back to the functional equivalent of stock tires and gears, except you're trying to spin a MUCH heavier hunk or rubber. If 33s are on your radar, I'd suggest 4.56 gears.
JohnQ
I haven't used them yet, but they come highly recommended from TX4wd forum and Cypress Offroad forum. Javier's Gulf Coast Crawl Shop 713-461-5595 They are located south of Houston. The guy that bought my XJ Dana 44 had it built up by these guy's and told me that they do really great work and are competitive on they're prices. I plan on using them when I get ready to build up my Dana 44.
