smartazz19
Will removing an EGR valve lead to failing emissions? I'm trying to clean up my engine bay and removng all the egr piping/valve and blocking it off with a plate would be much cleaner/simpler. Also, my exhaust manifold is cracked. I have a YJ 2.5L exhaust manifold, that does not have an EGR port. So i could swap it on and it work be nice. But my ultimate question, why is it there??? Yes i know it reciculates some exhaust gas into the intake. Can this be removed? I'm working on a 2.5L throttle body injected 86 MJ. Thanks for any ideas. mjstiltheydie
Not if you want a license plate on it. Metro Altanta is strict about that.
smartazz19
Ya but my 97 doesnt have an EGR, nor did my 91, as long as its within its numbers it shouldnt matter right? they don't actually look and go "hey this one doesnt have an EGR"
joshmillslane
It depends. In VA they do a visual check for all factory installed emissions components, then run it on a dyno. BTW, mine was failing miserably with a bad EGR. I'd be suprised if one could pass without one.
aemsee
with the higher temps you have down in Ga, you could experience some damaging engine detonation without one installed. The EGR reduces NOx by lowering combustion chamber temps.

carnuck
If you want to mod the motor so the EGR isn't needed, you'll need the later manifold and EFI system, then retard the timing chain @5 degrees
smartazz19
Id rather just swap in a complete MPFI YJ motor. But I'm just going to clean up the engine bay as much as possible, problably get a new EGR they arent that expensive.. Plus i have to replace my exhaust manifold anyway. Anybody have any experience with the $37 manifold off ebay?
carnuck
I bought one but haven't used it yet. Looks good!
