long cranking start

Recommended Posts

i've got a 91' 4.0L eliminator. the problem is most of the time it takes about 5-10 cranks to start. by the 2nd or 3rd it boggs down then slowly starts cranking faster till it finally starts.

i found that if i feel it bogging down and stop trying to start it then turn the key again it will start right up.

then some times(mostly when its not warmed up) it will just start up imediately.

Thanks ahead of time.

I would definately check your battery cables, and battery. If they check out, then check your grounds and clean where they connect to the block and firewall. And after that, add a ground wire from your negative terminal to the fender or firewall for a better ground. Worked miracles for my starting times.

I had a two 90's that had a very slow starting problem. I ended up putting a fuel pump in it to solve the problem. It had something to do with the fact that it wouldn't hold fuel pressure after it shut off. It didn't seem like there was any problem with the pump but for some reason it worked.

the factory computers, both renix and HO, take 4 cranks for the CPS to read the positioning as 100% correct, and safe to fire. then because they've got locations right, the injection timing will be turned on in sync with the mechanical timing, and the motor will start.

you'll have a delay no matter what you do. so something's not right with yours lengthwise, but it's not gonna start on the snap of a finger anyways.
