john.silm
Hey All! My 4wd ax-15 is on its way out and I found a nice 2wd ax-15 at the junkyard for under $200. I have read that the spline counts are different (4wd 23 ; 2wd 27), but I am under the impressions the tail housings are interchangeable and want to make it work because a transmission rebuild kit is $400 from Novak. My question is if anyone has any thoughts about making it work... perhaps a new input shaft for my 231? Sorry if anything in this post is off, I am a bit new. Something along these lines... NP231/233 Input Shaft, 27 spline, '88-'94, Wide Bearing; Part # 17191
Eagle_SX4
Both the tail shaft and housing will need to be swapped over. Which will require nearly full disassembly of both transmissions. At which point you would want to get a rebuild kit. All 4x4 AX15 transmissions have a 23 spline output shaft. The 2wd drive version has a slip joint for the driveshaft. The 27 spline input shaft you linked is for the Chevy version of the 231 and would not work for this application. I would just rebuild your 4x4 AX15 vs getting a used 2wd version. I got my rebuild kit on rockauto for $200. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10581108
john.silm
Thank you for your input... any quality concerns about the rebuild kit for rock auto vs novak vs _____? is it worth spending almost double the price on the novak kit? I am on a pretty tight budget but don't wanna buy junk. https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/transmission/transmission-parts/ax15-parts.html
Eagle_SX4
My kit came with Nachi bearings which are supposed to be very good bearings and the synchros are very well machined. Seems like a good high quality kit to me.

ghetdjc320
Checkout Allstate gear. They use all nachi bearings, and synchroking synchronizers. They also offer most all small parts including the 5th gear update kit. Depending on the year of you ax15, you’re likely going to need a different synchro for 3/4 than what comes in most kits. I posted up some of the synchro differences and pictures in my build thread (pages 24-25) along with some upgrades that can be done at the same time. I’m not sure if I noted this or not in my posts but I ended up removing the “new style” synchro with different tooth design and replaced it with the correct tooth design which should perfectly match the synchro hubs. I will defiantly be ordering parts from them for the next transmission I rebuild. @john.silm the rebuild kit is only $127 and includes synchros. https://www.allstategear.com/AX15-Jeep-Bearing-Kit-with-Synchro-Rings-p/bk163jws.htm

I don’t recall if it was the 3/4 or 1/2 that were incorrect. I believe it was the 3/4. I’ll check my notes
ghetdjc320
It is the 3/4 gear synchros that are the problem in most newer kits. Grab an extra pair of 1/2 synchronizers and use those on 3/4. You could probably get away with reusing the 3/4 synchros if they are in good shape. Pay attention not just to the synchro teeth but also to the cone surface on the back side. That is the portion that provides the needed friction for proper spin up and gear engagement. Here is the link to the proper earlier ax15 3/4 synchronizers: AX15 R151 1-2 Synchro Ring TOY-14C - AX5 5 Speed Jeep Repair Part
john.silm
Woah! That rebuild kit is way cheaper than what I was looking at. Thanks for linking it. I will definitely snag an extra 1/2 synchronizer and start the rebuild this summer...
