DYI Transmission Control Unit repair

Recommended Posts

TCU/TCM DYI fix. My ‘88 AW4 would start out in 4th and not downshift. I was able to manually shift gears with the column shifter so I bought a used TCU/TCM and it fixed my problem. Out of curiousity I took my old TCM apart and discovered a single burned up resistor. I ordered a new one and soldered it in and wouldn’t ya know it, success! Just passing this along in case it might help someone else because the older TCMs are getting harder to find. https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/koa-speer-electronics-inc/CF1-4CT52R272J/13537194?so=88501518&content=productdetail_US

Most issues with electronics are just something simple like this. Or a cracked solder joint. Those I can deal with easily enough, usually just takes a gentle poke with a soldering iron to reflow the blob. I wish I had the time to learn more about electronic components and testing. I can guarantee you’d save thousands over a life of repairs.
