BLHTAZ
I have been told that it is "normal" for the renix engine to take several rotations to start. Mine always cranks for 3-5 seconds before actually firing up. I thought it was a problem, but 3 different people have said that it is normal for this engine. Not sure if you really have a problem or not as mine will also take a bit longer or even a couple trys to start if it has been sitting for a while. Here is a link that describes basic Renix sensors The CPS is second to the end.. It is said that if you unplug the CPS and then plug it back in it gets a better signal to the computer.. chicofuentes0224
Nappa has it. Mine is the same 4.0 automatic 1988. Part number CSS980SB. It cost me $34.13, but I lie and say I work at a shop. Regular price said, $47.23. It helped a little but not much. If the truck sits for more than a day it still takes a couple tries and a longer crank to start. Everyone seems to say on this board that it is completely normal for this engine and year, so I wouldn't worry about it.
CWLONGSHOT
The renix 4.0 will take a bit of cranking to fire. Just couple 3-5 seconds is normal. BUT, Are you letting the pump pressurize the system before starting? Turn the key to on, wait a couple seconds and crank. Turning the key "ON" and waiting a second, is on par with the couple quick "pumps" on the accelerator with a older carburated vehicle. When I went thru mine, (Even thou it only had 60,000 at the time.) I got minute decreases in cranking times by having everything properly set and CLEAN. TB, Plugs cap rotor, wires, injectors, TPS properly set. Wiring connections clean, weatherproof and tight. All these made minute changes, lowering the cranking times. The one biggest decrease in cranking time came when I rewired the charging system. Probably took a full second off the time!! CW
