offroader461 Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 My 90 XJ has decided to get a bug up its but and toss this problem at me....just recently for some reason it starts to shift at oddball RPM like 3500 up to 4000...has erratic shift patterns and feels like it was slipping also...checked the fluid...LOW...so i filled it up and it went away...so i parked it at home for about 35min and left and it started again but not as bad...what could it be? bad TCU, TPS or shift solenoids or something else? Its an A/T
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Check the TPS. http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech/TPS.html
Pete M Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 If you haven't already, I would check the fluid level again. There might have been air pockets in the trans before and the fluid level was actually even lower than it looked. My buddy's old Bronco had a trans that would do that (the air pocket thing, not the erratic shifting thing).
HellCreek Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I agree with Adam. It's the TPS. It happened to me on my Cherokee.
offroader461 Posted December 28, 2007 Author Posted December 28, 2007 thx ill go down and pick another one up...I'm sure its the original w/176K on it...
offroader461 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 well i did some more tests...i re-adjusted the TPS to the specified .8 volts at idle and checked for any dead spots throughout the throttle band...tested good... so i dropped the pan to test the solenoids and wow...the trans fluid was brownish black and the filter looked horrible...so i replaced both the filter and fluid and well see if it helped the problem when i take it for a drive tomorrow
