Some of the locomotives use sand to provide extra traction on the rails for drive wheels.  From what I remember it's only used on hills though and your trip looked pretty flat.  Interesting.

Maybe that was it, It seemed like it was coming down from the smoke, but it wasn't constant. I had assumed it was because of wind or how much coal they were feeding it?

the coal burners are dirty, dirty things.  all sorts of particulates exit that stack.  but I love 'em. :D  got to do the Durango/Silverton line when I was a kid.  :banana:
