Joe Dirt
I think my trans synchro's are shot. The clutch is shot as is my slave. Was curious to know if my trans out of my parts cherokee would work. My Comanche is an 87 4.0 and my parts truck is a 96 4.0 HO. I know ppl say take the bell housing and external slave but didn't know if i could just swap out trans completely. Thanks y'all. Joe Dirt
Its 5 speed to 5 speed. Guess its not a direct bolt in?
87MJTIM
I am assuming your 87 has a BA10 - factory. The 96 will bolt up to your 4.0. However, there are several parts you need to bring along from the 96: The transmission, including the bell housing, and internal fork. The transfer case (your old one will not fit [assuming BA10]) The tcase shift linkages The hydraulic master-slave cylinders The trans cross members and trans mount. The pilot bearing/bushing will need to be changed. The trans input shaft tips are different sizes. Probably a good time to change the clutch The drive shafts will fit the AX15. Joe Dirt
My clutch is wiped n have a chirp from bearing or slave. My truck doesn't like 3rd gear or downshifting especially from 4th to 3rd. I planned on doing everything including rear main seal while is apart. I'm actually gonna farm the job out cause i don't wanna do it all on my back in my driveway. Ill drop the 1 out of my 96 cause its lifted n have room. Ill take everything i have to trans shop and see what they can do. At very least i shold use the bell housing, right? Then i get external slave, correct? Is the 15 better than the 10 for any other reasons? Thanks again.
87MJTIM
If your old one is the BA10, the bell housing do not swap. You need to take the whole AX15 - bell housing and the parts in the BH. Also, grab all the parts I listed above for the swap. The AX15 is a better transmission.
Pete M
not every repair shop is comfortable with swapping a transmission that is not identical to the old. there are many details to keep track of beyond what the R-n-R book states.
