23 gal fuel tank huh...me likey, and thanks. Gotta check axle ratio and look for any data tags.

yeah, always take them with a grain of salt. :L:   technically that said "20 gal" which is not an MJ size at all, but so far all I've been able to confirm that when it returns a 20, it's a 23.  it's easy to check, as the 23 has 3 straps, while the 16 only has 2.

Youre thinking the 18 Pete under the short beds. Mine had the 16 gallon and still used the three straps before converting to the 23 gallon tank. But that being said the 20 gallon tank code is more common to XJs and our tank code probably got replaced at some point after the MJ was phased out.

wait, are the 23 and 16 the same tank but with a different length vent tube to cut back the volume it holds?  or am I thinking of another Jeep?  @eaglescout526

That is correct. Both tanks are the same but the neck inside the tank the dumps the fuel in is longer and stops the nozzle at the fuel pump from putting more fuel in because it’s the full 16 gallons.

That's a YJ thing too, write ups on removing the extra and gaining more fuel.
