Armyvet25
is this info purely based on the vin?
eaglescout526
Yes. This info is unique to your VIN. I can’t pull these out of thin air like my co workers think with parts they can’t find haha.
Armyvet25
23 gal fuel tank huh...me likey, and thanks. Gotta check axle ratio and look for any data tags.
eaglescout526
Yeah some of them are wrong so take them with a grain of salt as Pete says. The axle ratios is what we seem to find to be commonly wrong with the build sheets. Except the D44, that seems to show up right.
Armyvet25
since original interior, possible build sheet under seat, or to new for them?
eaglescout526
Well 86 “red” interior is weird. It looks like you have the mid garnet that is about to go to cordovan for 87. But you also have an early 86 which should be more garnet. It looks original to the MJ and probably is.

Gotta check axle ratio and look for any data tags. yeah, always take them with a grain of salt. technically that said "20 gal" which is not an MJ size at all, but so far all I've been able to confirm that when it returns a 20, it's a 23. it's easy to check, as the 23 has 3 straps, while the 16 only has 2. Pete M
oh, and the build sheet could be in the door panel, under the dash on the pass side, or behind the carpet rear panel. or not there at all.

Mine had the 16 gallon and still used the three straps before converting to the 23 gallon tank. But that being said the 20 gallon tank code is more common to XJs and our tank code probably got replaced at some point after the MJ was phased out. Pete M
wait, are the 23 and 16 the same tank but with a different length vent tube to cut back the volume it holds? or am I thinking of another Jeep? @eaglescout526

Both tanks are the same but the neck inside the tank the dumps the fuel in is longer and stops the nozzle at the fuel pump from putting more fuel in because it’s the full 16 gallons. That's a YJ thing too, write ups on removing the extra and gaining more fuel.
