Leaky Power Steering Cap and booger tack welds

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was wondering if it is normal for the caps on the comanche steering pumps to always have power steering fluid on top of them. The cap is brand new. Every time I open the hood, I always see a small amount of fluid on the cap nipple and lid edge.

Also, are the welds that join the sheet metal below the battery tray to the passenger fender well normally tack welds? Mine look incredibly poorly made, like the welder was 1/2 drunk.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

You need new sway bar bushings.

Inspect the hoses at the pump. Any leaks? Perhaps the power steering fluid is foaming. Ever changed it?

Can't say for sure on the welds without looking at mine. Sure doesn't look like a robotic spot weld though.

Yeah, I need new sway bar bushings, stabilizer linkages, springs...

The whole front suspension is shot and needs replacement.

I have never changed the power steering fluid. I will have to look into foaming.

I'm just curious if anyone's battery tray area looked as poorly welded as mine. It seems very strange. The body is otherwise straight and there are no records of accidents or collisions on my comanche.

It has been in the 90s (farenheit), so maybe heat is causing the power steering fluid to expand?

I’ve talked about the quality of welds in my build thread a few times. Having owned a 90 and 91 I can tell you there is zero consistency in factory welds. The 91 I had the welds looked very clean like someone knew what they were doing. I’m not referring to the spot welds mind you. It’s the hand welding that was done all over the Jeep. My 90 looks like yours. Utter crap welds with spatter all over the place. Also looks like they probably used a flux core wire as the spatter was epic. I’ve cleaned off sooo much spatter. Any welds that looked questionable I just went over with my mig setup then cleaned them up.

It does have me wondering though if there are welding quality differences between the amc and Chrysler gears though.
