2.5L questions

Might be a dumb question but how do I figure out specifically what kind of transmission I currently have? After browsing online looks like most people are recommending an ax5-15 for the 4x4 conversion

If you have a 4spd, it's an AX-4.  If you have the 5spd it's an AX-5.  they are identical on the outside.  the AX-5 just has overdrive added.

the AX-5 is found behind every year of 2.5/2.8 engines and bolts right up. (the 2.5L was used through the 90s so don't think you need a super old Jeep to get what you need).  the AX-15 is the bigger brother found behind the 4.0 and requires a special bellhousing to adapt to the 2.5L.  It's tougher, but hardly necessary.

you're not going to find many threads on doing a 4x4 conversion because of how easy it is. :L:  it all just bolts right in. :D  a factory shop manual would be a good source for the step by step instructions.  take out the 2wd stuff and put in the 4x4 stuff.  a donor XJ is usually suggested but a junkyard can work too.

So I might have found a guy with all the parts I need for the conversion. They might be here on the forum somewhere. Anyways for now I’m working on the valve cover replacement. If you look at the engine bay pic you’ll notice someone modified the filler cap and put a breather cone on. I’d like to return this to the original setup or as close as possible. Upone further inspection I have found a tub zip ties to the rear of the engine bay. Pics are posted along. Was that supposed to be some kind of valve cover breather tube? Any info and tips would be helpful.

I split your questions off into Tech so more eyes will see them. :L:

So the one tube you’re holding by the firewall goes to the charcoal canister for the gas tank. The other one went to the air box lid.

I can post a pic of my engine bay as it is stock as a stock Renix 2.5L can be if you need a reference.

Thanks again eaglescout526. I quickly did a search of what this charcoal canister is and it makes perfect sense. Also took a closer look at the tube and looks like it’s got a cut right where it would have slipped on. Would the fact that’s it’s not currently tied into the air box affect a safety check? I’m debating on just mounting it to the cone intake as it is now

I’ve got a few more pics I’d like to share. There are a few plugs that are loose and was hoping someone could shed some light. Haven’t looked into what these plugs do yet.

eaglescout526 is on 🔥. Based of that info I probably won’t be doing anything with the plugs. Doesn’t look like it have any options in the cab as far as power steering pressure gauge, cruise control switch and washer fluid gauge. It’s a manual so the rules out the auto plug. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Are there any caps for these plugs out there? Caps would make it look much cleaner imo

Well there isnt a power steering gauge. How it works is a sensor screws into one of the lines and sends info to the ECU based on the pressure from the power steering system. As the pressure decreases, the idle increases to accommodate steering assistance to the driver. As pressure increases, the idle calms down from the lack of demand for steering assistance(I might have this backwards. I am going to go double check). I am sure you probably can get some plugs, I have never looked into it so I can't point you in the right direction with those.

Ok I am right on the operation and its a switch, not a sensor. From the 2.5L operations and diagnosis manual: "The power steering switch is an input to the ECU via the air conditioning select and request input lines(My MJ did not have AC from the factory but had power steering so it still operated in the same manner just no AC which I now have haha)When the power steering pressure exceeds 275 psi ± 25 psi(19.6 bars ± 1.7bars), such as at idle during parking, the power steering switch closes to inform the ECU to raise the idle speed."

The Comanche does not currently have power steering but might look into it at a later date again. Guess those plugs will have to be loose for a while. Took it out for a spin today and she runs well but with a couple issues. The exhaust was rusted off at a bend so it sounds like a tractor. I do have a welder at home to fix this. Brakes are practically non existent. If I push the peddle in I got a little bit of braking from the front left corner and if it’s in all the way the rears wanna lock up. Never done a brake bleed but the info I have found looks pretty straightforward. Any tips and info appreciated
