farmboi
Doing the 'Big 7' upgrade and I like to follow instructions whenever I can The instructions from jeepcables.com say that 'it is ESSENTIAL that the shroud remains in place'. Mine does not have a shroud; the connection was just covered by a rubber boot that has obviously been there for quite some time. Soooooo, how essential is it actually? How would you proceed? ghetdjc320
Eeks that’s close. I’d recommend that you add a couple of layer of heat shrink around the base of that terminal on the cable to prevent any possible arcing to the alternator body. Also, flip that cable connection so the wire itself is further from the alternator body. Could also use a piece of plastic and just drill a hole in it to use as a mock shroud
farmboi
Here is the new cable attached. I put it on to see how it looked/ how I felt about it. The old rubber boot was on a smaller gauge wire so I couldn't make it fit the heavier jeepcables.com version. I'm at least gonna go get a new boot for it before I finish up and try it out. What about placing a plastic or rubber washer under it?
schardein
I make my own cables. I've dealt with what you are doing many times. One of my go-to solutions is to use that factory boot, but trim about 1/4" off the end where the cable comes out. This effectively makes the opening bigger, for the bigger cable. I also source boots with a slightly longer end that the cable comes out of from 99+ Chevy trucks, and do the same trick of trimming the end off. farmboi
Went to a few auto parts stores looking for options, nothing panned out. In the end I booted it with as tight a boot as I could get on there. Fits pretty snug down over the existing rubber washer.
