do i need to pull motor with tranny .. what are the star  drive looking things on top of bellhousing .  yes this is my first attempt at a truck rebuild

The star bolts at the top of the transmission bell housing take an E12 socket. It’s a reverse torx bit. 
 

As for pulling the engine and transmission, what are doing with your truck?

I prefer pulling the engine with tranny together and installing it together also. With the radiator support removed it is an easy pull

rebuilding motor and replacing front and rear seals

I'm resting the truck thanks for the info . i was able to get motor and tranny out but then sold my house  trucks been in storage.
