91-96 XJ pedals in 88 Laredo/Upgrading brake system

Recommended Posts

Well, I accidentally bought 91-96 XJ pedals.

I'm still thinking of selling them, but after conversing with @Torq_Shep and poring through CC posts, I might take this as an opportunity to upgrade to a ‘96 XJ brake system.

Before I get all gung-ho about it and start throwing yet more money into my black hole project, aside from needed the 91+ stoplight switch, can the pedals be used in my pre-91 truck?

Yes.  I swapped a '96 booster/master in my 87.  Then promptly proceeded to screw up grinding down the end of the booster arm to accomodate the brake light switch (I ground a tad too much off).  Went back to the junkyard to the same XJ and pulled the entire pedal assembly and swapped it in.  The only thing you'll need is the newer brake light switch from the 96.  There's 6 wires into/out of it, you only need the 2 for the light switch.  Cut all the wires long and find the pair of wires that show continuity when the plunger is depressed, those are the ones you need (I've long since forgotten which colors they were).  Splice them into the 2 wires for the original switch.

Awesome! I’d thought about just switching out the booster, but didn’t know of it would work until I googled and searched CC for more info. My much bigger worry is that there would just be something that straight up wouldn’t work with the pedals.

Well if you end up getting the set for your truck I’ll take the 91+ ones.

I’m considering everything. After reading that the 96 XJ booster has like double the braking power, I became super interested. Just weighing my options is all. I’ll keep you updated!

I will say that out of all the mods I ever did to my MJ, the booster/MC upgrade was one of the best ones.  But it was an absolute PITA trying to do it solo.  Do yourself a favor and get an extra set of hands to help, one person under the hood moving things around and another under the dash to get things lined up and bolted in.

I have my much more qualified ASE friend "helping me" (I'm helping him, really) and he's got an idea what to do based on the explanation from CC members.

No worries. I have a 2001 booster and MC in my 91.
