feerocknok
Will the axleshafts stay in with no ring gear, pinon gear, and spider gears? I'm looking to cut out the center section and use my old Dana 30 as a straight axle for a rat that I'm working with.
feerocknok
Eff. I'll probably pick up an actual 2wd straight axle for it. I just realized I pulled all the brakes off my old 4wd axle, and it's rear brakes that I don't want, not front. Can't do smokey burnouts with only rear brakes. But I'm still curious for an answer. UNL1MTD
If you only leave the outter shafts you should be ok. You need them to hold the integrity of the unit bearing. But you would not be able to do this with the inner shafts attached, because they would flop around destroy themselves/the housing with nothing for them to ride in. Like you said, you would be better of with a 2wd straight axle. I don't see why the brakes wouldn't work though. I have driven sans inner shaft on my driver's side with no affect to braking. pingpong
ON the 4wd front axle you must keep the outer axle shaft in place.... The wheel bearing has no strength to take side loads, and will destruct quickly leaving your vehicle with one less tire and a bunch of other damage. Eagle
^^^ 10-4 what they said. Keep the stub axles in the hubs, remove the inner axles.
mjeff87
I've got the 2WD beam axle from my MJ sitting up near Pittsburgh, PA. You can have it for free......you just have to come pick it up :D Jeff

The outer axle shafts won't bounce around at all?
87manche
nope, just leave the stubs in the bearings. You'll have just the stub and the yokes, no inner axle shaft. Then just stuff something in the tube to keep the water from pooling in the center section.
