CA smog legal air intake for 87 4.0?

Recommended Posts

Solution-leave California. No smog tests :).

Now someone in cali correct me if I’m wrong but I thought commiefornia doesn’t allow any mods to the fuel/emissions system and have to keep everything stock.

Real question is what is stopping your truck from passing?

Bought the car in Nevada, which does not require smog laws, so it has a simple cold air intake. Rather than deal with the mess of what vacuum line goes where, I was hoping to just put a CA sticker approved cold air on it. But its looking like imma have to figure out what line goes where.

Makes sense.

Vac lines can be relatively easy to figure out. Which era and engine do you have? Renix or HO? Most of the lines seem to come back around to the stock air box. There’s two bigger holes for bigger hoses. One on the back of the lid and one on the side or the tube to the throttle body depending on the Year of the truck. Some smaller lines might also plug into the box depending on the year and engine.

Just noticed the title. But has the engine been swapped for a newer setup?

Have an 87  with the renix block and a HO head from a 92(? maybe 91?) that I'm putting on once the head gets back from the hot tank. Its just a matter of personal preference with the cold air intake.

I’ve had several early XJ’s and 3 MJ’s. There are NO CARB legal cold air intake set up’s for 87 to 90 XJ or MJ. Both MJ and XJ have the hot air pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner box to heat air in cold weather climates. Also the top of the air cleaner housing has the vacuum thermal valve that control the hot air door. As per smog laws you can’t remove those items.
Now I’ve made my own intake or used one for a 91. Smog time comes I installed the stock intake set up. Not a big deal.
