Wounded_Fighter Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 Theoretically speaking... what's the worst that could happen if you forget to put the guide in on the side of the cover...? (With a new timing set)
OldManComanche Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 Is the old bumper still installed inside the cover? Do you remember how worn it was?
Wounded_Fighter Posted June 14, 2020 Author Posted June 14, 2020 That is the old one... I don't recall a new one in the set so.... if this is like vital, i have to dig again. (Facepalm)
OldManComanche Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 I thought I was the only one who can't remember what I did!! Why did you have the cover off? replacing timing chain?? Most of the chain kits I have seen will have a replacement rubber cushion.

I double checked.. both kits (timing chain and gasket kits) I got didnt come with that bumper/cushion... Took off to do timing. Never did since I owned it over a year decided its time.
OldManComanche Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 I don't think it does anything other than act as a bumper for the slack side of the timing chain, it isn't spring loaded to keep tension on the chain. I would guess that it keeps the chain from slapping around (noise) or engine turns backwards accidentally. Having said that, If it was me, I would pull the cover off and put it in. My theory is "if it wasn't needed, Jeep wouldn't have put it in! I get to thinking about stuff like this that I have done and it makes me crazy!! (make a note for ME so I will remember what told you next time!)
Wounded_Fighter Posted June 14, 2020 Author Posted June 14, 2020 I already put everything back on 2weeks ago. Haha. Trying to feel for its necessity
OldManComanche Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 Good Man! When I do stuff like this it makes me nuts till I get it back right!

mjeff87 Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 Well...you asked. If it was me, I'd tear it apart and put it back. If it were a 2.5L that uses a chain tensioner I probably wouldn't worry about it so much, but you don't have a tensioner. It'll most likely be just fine, but like others it would bother me to no end. And like OldMan says, it if wasn't needed it wouldn't be there in the first place.
