Sometimes start sometimes not!!

Well for the past week or so I've had to bang the column shifter around from park to drive, to park, to neutral, back to park.... ect. to get it to start...... Any suggestions on what to do or tweak to fix this. I did alot of searching but couldn't find anything that sounded the same.

Even though is it used on the XJ, it is the same switch as on the MJ :D

tried to get one off of an 89 today --- would not slide off --- removed the nut and the bolt --- any ideas?
