Highly Modified Cup Holder

Recommended Posts

LOL, just kidding on the title! Anyhoo, I've been wanting to try a mod to the cup holder that screws in to the center console on MJ/XJs in front of the storage compartment. As anybody that has one of these knows, it is very shallow and even a regular soda can easily tips over,  not to mention an errant elbow will definitely do the trick. I had bought one of the side mount cupholders that clip on to the passenger side of the center console, but they are also very shallow and there's not exactly a ton of leg room to begin with, so that never worked for me either. Today I finally broke out the Dremel and cut this bad boy up, I ain't a'skeert'd!

My approach was to make one of the holders ideal for soda cans, adult beverages and the like. The other holder I wanted to be able to hold a tall cup like coffee, restaurant soda cups and plastic tumblers. While it's not the prettiest (although I gave a quick shot of Fusion Satin Black), it appears this may be successful. The real trick will be bouncing around in the truck, but I think it's going to hold drinks in place finally.

The "can" side I just cut out the bottom including where the sidewalls begin to curve in to the bottom. With just a little push, the can slides through the bottom but snugly holds in place. The plastic is very thin of course, so I may have been able to even leave a little of the curve, or flare, on the outer edge of the bottom for an even tighter fit as I believe the "flare" would flex. Worst case just trim it back to where I have it now. But it feels snug enough as I have it now that a can is going to stay in place. The "cup" side I cut out the bottom and the original sidewall. This allows a large cup to drop in far enough until the cup widens near the top and holds it in place, low and snug. The "can" side will hold a tall narrow cup also, sitting higher though, but you can therefore have 2 "cup" drinks in place at once. The "cup" side is too big for a regular can, so I'll be limited there, but I like the versatility of the dual sizes. I'll report back when I get it remounted and "tested" lol, but my center console is out of the truck at the moment.
