BeatCJ
I replaced the fuel pump a couple of months ago. Now I am back to crank no start no sound from the fuel pump. I checked voltage at the harness side of the plug, I have 9.90 volts on crank, and about 5.5 for 3 seconds on run. That means my problem just about has to be the pump right? eaglescout526
Should be getting 12V out to the pump. You could always take it out and test it. Does your 87 have the C101? Want to do some FP circuit testing?
BeatCJ
Yes, I have the C101. I cleaned/refreshed it before I replaced the fuel pump. I also cleaned to ground in the taillight, but I haven't added a fuel pump ground. I just got a tip for my ancient Craftsman soldering gun. I will pull the pump and try jumping 12 volts directly to it. Waiting for anyone to get home from work and help me drag it home. It's on the private drive, mostly out of the way, or I would just hook up the car trailer and use the come-a-long and get it home that way. Seems like too much effort for 1/4 mile... Yes, I want to do some circuit testing, my biggest problem is no helper to turn the key. I need some alligator clips for my meter, too. I had gotten groceries, and stopped to pick up my empty recycle bins. And then it wouldn't restart. Errrrr.
eaglescout526
That kind of day huh? Well I have an 87 elec diagram we can consult and trace the circuit. Chances are the FP wire will go through C100 which is the bulk head connector for the front end.
jdog
Do you still have the ballast?
BeatCJ
Not that bad a day. A couple of errands, and noticed the local Pick and Pull had the right year Cherokee manual, but the transmission was gone before I got there. What irritates is that it was running like a top until I shut it off and then it wouldn't restart. Yes, and the ballast reads 1.5 ohms resistance. I am pretty sure when I installed the pump, I was getting the same voltage at crank. In my mind, if the ballast drops the voltage to 5 or 6 at run, priming at 9.9 should still allow it to start. And I am getting voltage to the pump connector on crank and run.
BeatCJ
Well, I finally got a warranty replacement fuel pump. So I pulled the non working pump out, and I used jumpers direct to 12 volts, it's like it's locked up. No pumping at all, no whirring, chugging, whining, clicking. I just doesn't chooch. one thing that worries me, it looked like the pickup sock was covered in clay, or diatomaceous earth. Or, in my neck of the woods, volcanic ash. What the Heck? So I dropped the tank again. The crud (white gray fine powdery coating) is all over the inside of the tank. I suspect it killed the new pump. Now I need to clean it out. I'm going to try acetic acid first, I think, along with a handful of sharp clean gravel. There isn't any rust, so I hate to spend $150+ on a new tank. Anyone else seen goo like this? Sorry, forgot to take a photo last night. I'll look at taking one tonight.
