Recommended Posts

Hi, first of all thank you for letting me be part of this club.
I’m about to buy a 1986 Jeep Comanche, the only thing is that it’s a 4x2. I want to do a modification and instal a 4x4 transmission. Any suggestion of Which one is the best that I can use ?

thanks a lot.
Keep safe.

What engine do you have currently?

Why do you want to go 4x4?

What would you use the truck for that 4wd would be better?

Also, be sure you add it to the registry, and when you get it be sure to start a build thread. I would also recommend adding the truck details to your signature and checking under the carpet for rust.

Well. Lets see. Given the choices for 86, 2.5L, 2.8L V6 or the 2.1L Renault, only two of those engines share the same 90* GM bolt pattern. Your choices are limited to the year 86. I could be wrong on that and I'm sure someone will correct me but you have a Torqueflite A904 auto trans, AX4 and an AX5. If you get lucky and can find a trans that will bolt up behind either the 2.5L and 2.8L that's better than the AX5, you're in luck. If you find an AX15 behind a 2.5L Dakota, well that's the best trans you can put behind either. But if its the Renault, yeah you only get the AX5.

The 2.8L is a 60-degree V6, not 90-degree.

The same engine and transmissions were used in the 1984 and 1985 Cherokee, and the 2.5L 4-cylinder continued through the 2000 model year. The question is about transmissions, so all those years are available. Also, in '84 and '85, due to supply shortages, some Cherokees had T4 or T5 transmissions. Those can also be used in the '86 MJ.

If it’s a manual transmission I’d go ax-5 with np231, they are plentiful and usually cheap. Ax15 is the gold standard because it’s so tough, like the Toyota versions (r154) it’s sought after by people doing upgrades.

There was one year the Cherokee /mj got the aw4 transmission for the 2.5, aw4 too is a legendary transmission.

I forgot about the t4 & t5 in the Hollander break down there is a choice two manual transmissions listed.
