Parking brake cables

Three part question, are the rear cables the same length for long and short beds? Did MJ's ever use center mounted brake lever like XJ? Has any one had this problem, with a moderate load in my long bed the cables contact inner wheel weights and make an ungodly banging noise, each has a spring that appears to be there to keep cables pulled inboard but don't do the job. I have standard turbo wheels so I don't believe spacing is the problem and I can't see any other way to route them

1. Let me check the catalogue. Yes, short and long beds are the same for the rear brake cable distribution.

2. No they didn't have XJ hand brakes. But others have adapted such to work with MJ's.

3. I have a similar problem except it was a grinding sound from the cable hitting the drum then became where the cable was scraping the inside of the rim and took a bit of the rim off as well. Damn useless springs. Also it seems like the cables don't like to stay where they should.

I ran into the same problem when I changed wheels on my Mj that the drivers side e brake cable rub against the wheel weight. I got some springs from Lowe’s about $5 for a pack added one to the e brake cable on the drivers side that fixed it for me. I highly suggest getting some plastic tubing that they have in plumbing and add it to the drivers side because depending on load and where you put the spring the e brake cable will rub on the gas tank. The tubing gives a buffer and cushion between the two. Since I done this, I haven’t have issues with my e brake cables. I can get some pictures of how I did the springs on my truck if you need them to help you out.

 would like to see that, mine have factory springs still in good shape but aren't doing the job, two fishing kayaks and a days worth of gear and my truck will turn every head going down the road very loud, Thanks

Sure. I sorry if the photo isn't the best but I can take another one if needed currently it's pitch black and raining. This is how I did the drivers side. I had no problems with the passenger so that side is just the oem spring.

think I can get the idea, my springs are further back towards the axle, raining here too when it gets better I'll crawl under and see if this will make a difference, will likely replace cables anyway as I will need rear shoes before long and cables are worn from contact and 30 years of use, Thanks
