Part-Time light on / gear lever in RWD

Recommended Posts

Not quite sure what's at play here, but my 4x4 gear lever is in RWD "normal" mode, but the part-time 4x4 light is on. I tried to switch once from RWD to 4x4, but didn't feel or see any difference in the snow. Light, however, remained stubbornly on. Any experience with this scenario?

your front axle has a 2-part passenger side axle shaft.  It's a silly gimmick that Jeep used back in the day in a futile attempt to gain mpgs (it doesn't save any calculable amount of gas).  what it did do was provide a very common failure point for us 30 years down the road. :(  when you pull the 4wd shift handle, in addition to shifting the t-case into 4wd mode,  it sends vacuum down a line to the front axle that engages the CAD up front that pushes over a collar that makes the 2-piece shaft into one.  It is common practice to bypass the CAD by engaging the collar all the time.  this does not mean you're in 4wd all the time, but rather it means that your Jeep will be like all Jeeps after like '92 when Jeep got rid of the CAD and went with a traditional 1-piece shaft.  Your 4wd shift handle still controls 2wd-4wd-lowrange.  there should be a writeup or 2 in the link in my signature for a couple of the ways you can bypass the CAD and fix the lack 'o 4wd. :L:

Pete, you're flawed on one statement.

That the CAD gives us problems 30 years down the road. LOL. That system was problematic when new!!!!!
