If he has a light, he doesn't have a gauge. But if the light isn't coming on, what reason is there to think that it's getting "super hot"?

See that’s where I’m questioning it, I went down to 7/11 the other night on break at work, it’s only like 5 minutes down the road but when I got back I ya know felt it and smelled it and it just seems it should get that hot just going that far distance, like I said I might be overthinking

If the dash temperature light is not working, the temperature switch may be bad. The temp switch is located at the left rear of the cylinder head. To test the temperature switch,

1. Turn the ignition to RUN.

2. Pull the wire connector off the switch and touch it to ground. The temp light on the dash should light.

3. If it does, replace the temperature switch on the head.

4. If the dash light does not come on, the bulb is bad or the wiring from the temp switch to the instrument cluster is open.

Got a new thermostat so I’m hoping that’ll help

Are you smelling/ seeing coolant or steam coming out of the coolant overflow bottle? A handy thing to have around is an infrared thermometer for verifying temps. Helps quickly rule out gauge/ indicator light problems. Plus they are just fun to play with.
