New England Overland Outfitters MJ

Recommended Posts

I've been lurking here for years and never posted a build thread. I daily drive my 87' MJ and also use it for my business,  New England  Outfitters.  I use the Jeep to wheel/ camp as much as possible and attend events as a distributor for Tepui Rooftop Tents.

I traded a Cherokee I had for this MJ and $800. I converted it from 2wd to 4wd, which was a little bit of a challenge to find the swap parts for a 4 cyl. I used a Dana 30 front from a mid -90s XJ and an Explorer 8.8. Both axles were re-geared to 4.88 with a truetrac in the front.  I found some 33x12.5 Km2s and mounted them on fake beadlock wheels.

I built this bed rack with 1-1/2 tubing to support a rooftop tent and some other a accessories.  The winch bumper is from The Flop Shop and the winch is an 8500 pound winch with synthetic rope.

You'll find me wheeling unmaintained roads in western mass, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Welcome. How do you like the top tent. Thinking about the same setup. What do you think the benefits are with it?

Did you build that bed rack yourself? It looks awesome.

I work for a company that does tube bending,  I had our machinist bend up some scrap 1-1/2 tube and welded it to 3x3 angle iron that's bolted to the top of the bed rails.

I can set the tent up in about 2 minutes and I don't need to be particularly picky about the terrain I camp on,  as long as it's flat. I've used it a lot over the last 2 years.

Thanks,  and yes I've still got the 2.5

Glad to see another 2.5 haha. I love the stubby bumper too, its actually the same one I want to order for my manche. How do you like the 4.88s with the 33s?

Makes it a hell of a lot more driveable around town.   Probably 65 mph tops on the highway. I've been daily driving it for 2 years now with the gears.
