Fuel Pump Woes

I recentley picked up an 88 Pioneer 4.0 4WD and it was running great until we went on some basic trails. Now the fuel pump will randomly die while driving and when going up hills I lose all power and stall out immediately. When I turn the key and the pump doesn't come on right away I can get it going by putting on then releasing the E-brake.

 

From what the previous owner told me the fuel pump was replaced about a year ago. The ground behind the tail light seems fine to me so I don't know where the problem could be.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Things that seem fine are not necessarily fine.

I'd also look for a loose connection personally, since your ebrake is not normally part of the fuel pump circuit.  I'm guessing the vibration from releasing it is wiggling something.  Perhaps the fuse, or the fuse holder pins.

 

Lots of the aftermarket fuel pumps are junk too, so just because it was replaced doesn't mean it's not the issue.  Unfortunately a lot of the jobber parts that are stocked by Autozone and the like are more or less tailored to people that aren't intending to own the vehicle for longer than a couple more years and simply don't last.

Check out the flat 6 pin connector and wiring above the E brake.

Thanks for the help guys! It seemed a combination of the ground location and a connection behind the fuse panel. It's all fixed now I'm off to fixing the front differential seals.....
