Price check & rebuild question

Recommended Posts

While I was at the junkyard today I saw another AX-15. It’s an external slave 4wd. Now the only issue, with it in neutral (or any gear) the rear output shaft won’t turn.

So what is the value of a non functioning external slave 4wd AX-15 (may have 250k miles) including the bell housing and other external slave parts? As i am replacing my current non functioning AX-15 same question but internal slave.

I have never rebuilt a transmission, but have heard the AX-15 is easier than most. Seeing as my current tranny is dead and not risking anything, what more specialized tools would be needed before taking on this as a project?

Around here, any complete xj/mj transmission in a "warrantied" working condition go for $200 with no core charge.

How much is the one needing rebuilt compared to one that they say is good?

Both my and the junkyard AX-15s are bad. I was wondering if there was any worth spending $80 to get the external slave tranny even tho it wasn’t working.

Side note, where can I find these warrantied transmissions for $200?

I buy all mine from a Southwest Auto in Terre Haute, IN. Ha.
The ax-15 I got from them is what is behind the Cummins in my MJ now. Haven't done anything to it at all yet...

Midwest Auto Jeep in Vincennes,IN sells nothing but jeep parts and ships everywhere. They've got "junk yard" prices but bought a lot of stuff off them too.
