Transmission swap: From manual to auto

Recommended Posts

'88 4.0 4x4.

Anyone have or know of a good write up for doing this swap? Looking for the wiring side of the swap.

Have a complete donor truck.

Better to do a full harness swap? Or can the related wiring and computers be added to the manual truck?

What about the auto trans "comfort /power" dash switch?

Thanks in advance!

Not 100% sure about the wiring, the comfort/power switch you don't need it, after 1992 jeep locks all XJ to power mode.

The switch changes RPM where the transmission shifts.

You can jumper it to always be in power mode, which more XJ owners seem to like.

I'm not sure what the system does if there is no switch wiring or what the basic minimal wiring you'll need is.

From what my searches show

The gearing ration of you axels my suck going from manual (3.07?) to auto (normally 3.55)

Stuff to swap crossmember, drives shafts, flexplate, shifter, throttle body brackets, kick down cable, cable that works the shifter lockout, brake pedal,

Depending on the year I'm not sure if the ecu/pcm cares what transmission.

No good write up that I can find.

Edit: maybe this link will help

The truck I'm doing this to is the Dually project.  It will have 4:11 gears and the equivalent of 32" tires.  Drivetrain will be a stroker Renix, AW4 (obviously), and 231 t-case.

Donor truck is an '87, Dually is an '88.

Will be swapping in either a column shift or floor shift with console.  (Have all parts and bits to do either shifter).

It's not standalone, it's wired into the half of the harness that runs from the ECU (thru the firewall) to where it splits around the battery area.  Or if you have a C101 it runs from there to the battery area.  You can leave the other half of the harness intact (from the C100 {fuseblock} to where it connects at the battery area).

You'll also need a new (auto) TPS with the trans pigtail.

Don't forget about the relays in the PDC if its the same as the 92. I'm getting ready to do the swap next summer and gathering parts. Going to end up just buying an XJ around the same year, rebuilding the transmission and calling it a day.
