NC Tom
So I have found a trans that I think/hope I can use for my 88. It's in a 90 Cherokee. I know the trans were changed during that model year. How can I tell if the spline count is correct without opening the case?
Green Mesa XJ
I think the 90 is the 21 count spline (87-90) and 91 up is the 23. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Right, but I thought they changed that midway thru 90. I'm wondering if I'm right about that and if there is a number or code on the exterior of the Cherokee that confirms it. Green Mesa XJ
When did a parts search they didn't show a mid year difference. Usually pretty accurate far as that goes. From the searches I've done everybody says 90 is a 21 spline except for ax15 which is 23 spline. As long as was built before August 1990 it still a 1990 model after August its a 91 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Jeep Driver
I think that midyear stuff is crapola. Surely, this is the one he is looking at- https://boone.craigslist.org/pts/6019005508.html The seller doesn't even know what year it is. But, for $150...........your core on a rebuilt will be that.........or..........$150 for a 23 spline TC...............you are still at $300 for a trans/TC combo. OP, go look at it, count the spline. Nope. Not that one. Although I did contact that guy and it won't work. It's newer than 90.
NC Tom
I think that midyear stuff is crapola. Okay, Cruiser54 school me. The guy has a couple of trannys. He has a 2wd that is in good shape, however, it's my understanding that you cannot convert 2wd to 4wd, so that's not an option. He has a 90 that stopped working. the mechanic said it was a bad pump? IDK what that means as a potential donor. He has a 95 too. That one can work if I swap the transfer case too, correct? Is it that easy-peasy? Install the trans and transfer case. Sell your old transfer case on craigslist and your old tranny to a trans shop as a core for $25 to $50. I'm out of my element here. What should look for in a used case and how much should I pay for a 90s case?
NC Tom
We'll I was wrong. He does not have a transmission to match the case. He's asking $150 for the case. Is that typical? And, if can get a transfer case and tyranny for $300, is that a good deal?

Green Mesa XJ
That's not bad price on the transfer case. What I'd call high fair but it's been years since I looked for a 21 spline np231 ($75-150 - years ago) 23 spline np231 that is where the lower price sitting about a year ago. ($100-250).You can do better sometimes but it depends on where you are. I've been looking for a spare 91-96 aw4 4wd off and on for years $100-200 is a good price if you can find it. I'm Not sure what the guy with the parts is doing, I'm kind of leery his stock keeps morphing. If his transmission is 1990 it should work with your transfer case just fine. If it's 1991 up you'd need to swap the gear for the right one or the transfer case to match the transmission.
