Fuel Injector Smoke

Recommended Posts

Hey all, haven't been on in awhile. Parked my baby at my brothers house and left it for 2 years. Long story short It was my daily driver until I got a work vehicle. New job and now I want my baby back. So I went to start it up and it fires right up and runs fine, however, I noticed smoke coming from one of the injectors where the injector meets the engine. I left it there because I don't really like the whole flame thing on my cars... So now that the back story is out of the way...

I'm sure that its just a O ring or something easy, but I figure if I go through all the trouble to take out the fuel rail and the injector, I may as well upgrade them all with new ones. So I've been going through threads and see everyone pretty much says go with 4 hole injectors. Can someone tell me the best place to get the best deal? I buy a lot of parts on Ebay which may not be the most popular place to shop, but I like it. I found theses but don't know anything about them. Any brands to stay away from, etc. Any input would be great.

The first ones are Ford 710 (or 700, as I found), the second are the Volvo 746.  The 746 are said to be better, but nobody has a straight answer as to why.  Either is an upgrade.

If you're seeing smoke it likely is fuel being vapourized.  It's probably just the orings that are shot, but the Renix injectors are a two-piece design and are known to split and leak.  Yes, you can burn your truck down with this stuff...

Thank you guys. I think I'll go with the Volvo 746 ones, that seems to be what a bunch of other forums recommend as well. The smoke I'm talking about is thin white smoke almost like steam. It kind of seeps out from the engine side, then dissipates pretty much immediately. I'm thinking it's just a shot seal. The O rings and injectors are probably factory and the trucks only been ran maybe twice in a little over 2 years. Either way, I'm going to change them all before I drive it home.

Yup, the orings will dry out if they've been sitting for a long time.  Get some new ones on there, use a dab of clean oil, WD-40, or something like that to lube them on install with the new injectors.  You might want to change the one on the fuel pressure regulator at the same time, it's the same oring as the injectors themselves.

Bought the new 746 ones from eBay. They actually say new, not reman. Guess I'll find out. Now I'm wondering, if I'm starting work on the ol girl again... should I start a new build thread? Or continue on my existing one that I've had forever. A Comanche's work is never done. :)
